5 Blades We Wish Were Baes in BOYFRIEND DUNGEON

Each week on Twitch and Alpha, hosts Erika Ishii and Trisha Hershberger talk video games with special industry guests, insightful coverage and a ton of audience interaction on our show Game Engine. Be sure to tune in every Tuesday starting at 4 PM PT to learn about what’s new and cool in the world of video games.

Through the wonder of dating sims, you can experience the myriad delights of dating pretty much anything nowadays; hot dads, men who turn into cats, girls who are secretly tanks, Cthulhu, alpacas, college-attending pigeons, the list goes on and on.

Dating sims are constantly pushing the limits on what people will want to make-out with and the newest title to join the ranks of these games which make us question our sexuality is Boyfriend Dungeon. No, this isn’t a game about locking up your dates. Boyfriend Dungeon is an adventure game where you fight monsters and gather treasure while trying to find love. Who might be the object of desire – slaying your loneliness and piercing your heart? Will you date someone with a rapier wit or perhaps find a companion with a well-honed edginess? Well, in Boyfriend Dungeon your sweetheart is your sword!

Yes, that’s right, in this game you date your gear. It may sound weird, but after watching this transformation sequence, you have to admit these blades have weaponized their sexiness.

There are a bunch of different weapons for you to date in Boyfriend Dungeon, including a dagger who loves art and scotch whiskey, or a laser-saber who’s a K-pop idol. There’s even a s set of brass knuckles that turns into a cute, cuddly cat for you to befriend! We’re super-excited to meet this arsenal of companionship, but if we had our say, there are a few iconic weapons we’d love to see get the Boyfriend Dungeon treatment. Here are 5 swords we’d love to cozy up to:

The Master Sword

Throughout the Legend of Zelda series, the Master Sword is faithful, dependable, and always there for you (granted it’s usually stuck in a stone pedestal). If you’re looking for the nice, wholesome type who will take you on a picnic lunch in the woods and is willing to wait across the years for you, then Link’s favorite sword might just be your soulmate.

Do you like your date to be a little cold, dark, and gothy? Then maybe World of Warcraft’s Frostmourne, with his bad-boy attitude and icy demeanor, will appeal to you. Sure he’s is a little controlling and your relationship might just turn you into a lich, but you’ll definitely be a power couple amongst the ghosts and ghouls of the dungeon.

Ivy’s Valentine from Soul Calibur is hiding a kinky little secret. While she seems like a straight-edge sword on the outside, when unleashed, she becomes a bladed whip crackling with black magic; ready to bring her enemies to their knees. Valentine is the kind of sword who will be happy to take charge and leave you begging for more.

The Keyblade keyblade

Pure of heart and full of encouraging speeches about the power of friendship, the Keyblade from Kingdom Hearts is a straight-up Disney prince. With him around, you can count on small woodland creatures to help you around the house and he’ll be happy to take you for a ride around the multi-verse in his gummyship, but if you’re looking for a quiet night in, Keyblade’s also always down for a night of Netflix and sea-salt ice cream on the couch.

Sephiroth’s blade, Masamune is a little impractical and perhaps a bit full of himself since everyone refers to him as a “legendary katana without peer”, but sometimes you just have to admit that size does matter.

Boyfriend Dungeon’s theme is bizarre yet intriguing and we cannot see how it all plays out next year when the game releases. You can learn more about it at or follow their blade-bae exploits on twitter at @KitfoxGames. Which of your favorite in-game weapons would you want to date? What kind of personalities do you think they’d have? Let us know in the comments below and be sure to tune into Game Engine on Twitch and Alpha for more video game goodness every Tuesday starting at 4PM PT.
