4 Times Vox Machina Has Played a Game That’s Not D&D

Luckily for fans of Critical Role, the members of Vox Machina and Dungeon Master Matt Mercer love to play tabletop games. No strangers to role-playing games, the cast of Critical Role is never afraid to jump into a game and embody a new character wholeheartedly.

You’ve enjoyed watching them for 100 episodes of Critical Role, now catch up on just some of the other games they’ve played together over the years here on Geek & Sundry.

Deadlands

Matt Mercer went from Dungeon Master to Marshall in this Deadlands: Reloaded game in the 2016 MDA charity stream. Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Laura Bailey, and Travis Willingham embraced the weird (and glorious accents) in this RPG that takes place in an alternate version of the Old West where magic and monsters run rampant.

Not only do you get to see everyone take on wildly different personalities than you’re used to, the audience’s ability to affect the game made this session completely unpredictable and hilarious.

And, naturally, the game started at… Hiiiigh noon.

Dread

GM Ivan Van Norman took Matt, Taliesin Jaffe, and their companions on a journey full of twists and turns in a game of Dread for International Tabletop Day 2017. Matt and Taliesin took on new characters, a photographer and a goth kid respectively, as they hiked to an abandoned cabin in the woods with their friends in the darkness of night. (What could go wrong?)

Instead of dice rolls, Dread tasks players making a game-changing action to pull a wooden block out of a tower. If the tower falls, the action fails, and terrible things happen. This game mechanic adds even more suspense to an already spine-tingling story that’s almost impossible to stop watching.

Paranoia

Paranoia

Ivan Van Norman took the ultimate group of role-players through Paranoia on No Survivors in 2016, including Matt and Laura, along with Critical Role guests Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day. Players become Troubleshooters in this role-playing game where you can’t trust anyone, especially each other. Each player has multiple lives, which is a good thing because things can go south quickly.

Chaos, crazy characters, and Computer reign in this session that’s almost impossible to describe, but the lengths that the players go to to stay in character are remarkable.

Escape!

Matt, Marisha, Laura, and Travis took on the role of, well, themselves in a game of Escape! this year. The four teamed up with Christopher Sabat to tackle an escape room designed with a magical school theme. With just thirty minutes to get out of a room filled with hidden messages and secrets, the team had to work together to put together the puzzle pieces in the right way and escape the evil wizard’s clutches.

This episode is worth your time just to see the faces Laura makes as the real potions they brew are quaffed by a very brave soul.

And if that’s still not enough Vox Machina for you, you can also find the Critical Role cast on various episodes of TableTop, Matt Mercer and Taliesin Jaffe have been guests on Eric’s TBD RPG Fridays on Twitch, Laura Bailey is also part of the Titansgrave cast, and you can see Laura, Travis, and Matt on an episode of Worthy Opponents.

What’s your favorite game with the gang? Tell us in the comments.
