3 Upcoming Board Games in 2017 All About Survival

Keep your wits sharp, your needs lean, and your sympathies cold (sometimes, at least) when crowding around the game board this year. It’s looking like survival is going to be another of the prevailing themes players will have to deal with throughout 2017.

The trio of new titles we’re looking at here invite players to take on the roles of Martian settlers, starship medics, and even “wasteland managers.” But while the settings range wildly from game to game, the theme is consistent; Try to live, and try to keep those around you alive. If that sounds like a delightful mission statement for the next cozy gathering, then make sure you check out these upcoming titles hitting a game store or fallout shelter near you.

Flatline

Survival-1

Forget Operation. Here’s a game to experience the ever-anxious race against the clock of a medical officer. Flatline is set on a starship in the universe of Fuse, but it pretty much lets players step into the shoes of “Bones” McCoy or Dr. Crusher (or whichever Starfleet doctor you prefer). The co-operative dice game has these medics work together on deck to treat the constant flow of the injured following an attack on their ship. If tossing dice wasn’t enough, a timer makes every second of every turn feel like your last. Fuse turned out to be a great party game that kept everyone on their toes. We’re hoping that Flatline gives us even more to sweat about in only a couple of minutes.

Outlive

Survival-2

With more than four years in the making, Outlive puts you on the seesaw of scavenging and management that life in a post-Apocalyptic wasteland entails. By day, players send their crews of survivors out to scour the ruins for resources. By night, they must put those resources to use, fortifying hide-outs and trying to pull more warm bodies into their alliances. Life in the end times is a zero sum game, of course, so goods are scarce, and players must compete for them like so many scurrying rats. Most intriguingly, Outlive‘s designers stress that it’s a “workers displacement board game” and promise that resource collection will be a challenge on many levels. Timing will matter as players can leave themselves open to getting undercut by competitors, or saddled with less-than-desirable goods, if they don’t plan raids smartly.

First Martians

Survival-3

It should surprise nobody that a Robinson Crusoe game could be shifted to the Fourth Rock from the Sun so smoothly. Re-tooling Adventures on the Cursed Island, the Portal Games crew has made Adventures on the Red Planet wired for its space age setting, integrating an essential app that extends and deepens the gameplay. As players vie to survive in the barren landscapes, they’ll have the option of playing self-contained games, a campaign mode, or even an open world mode that basically turns Mars into one sprawling red sandbox. The Portal crew is promising that the intrigue will extend well beyond those options, too, already teasing DLC updates which will add more survival scenarios

Do any other games of survival–past, present, or future–deserve the kind of attention we’ve put on this trio? Which of this set looks most enticing to you? Be sure to share all your thoughts and tastes in the talkback below.
