This is it X-Philes, the moment we’ve all been waiting for. This week Chris Carter and crew begin shooting The X-Files Revival. This may seem less important than the episodes actually airing (which won’t be happening until the end of January 2016), however this marks something we’ve never been able to experience before — The X-Files in the age of social media. Carter, Duchovny, and Anderson have already begun posting pictures left and right… though mostly of chairs. Even Glen Morgan, one of the head writers, has been posting his share of behind-the-scenes goodness. However, Monday marked the first day of actual set photos being “leaked” from the shooting location.
Here’s a quick rundown of what we know to expect during the revival and a few good social media accounts to stalk so you can follow along.
Disclaimer: There are vague BTS photos in the post, but none are too spoiler heavy. If you’re interested in seeing all of the set photos that have been floating around the internet, I’ve linked where they can be found.
I’m sure I will be updating this through out filming, so keep checking back!
When Does The Revival Take Place? What’s Being Revisited?
This next part of the saga takes place after the events of the second X-Files film, I Want To Believe. According to IMDb’s cast list, they’re bringing back characters from the original series run — such as Assistant Director Walter Skinner, The Cigarette Smoking Man, Agent Reyes, and Gibson — but as of right now it doesn’t look like any of the original characters from the latest film are returning.
Carter has been super secretive about the specific storyline of the revival, but he made an extremely vague comment about how Mulder and Scully’s relationship “is not where we left it,” which could mean absolutely anything. Additionally, the second episode of the revival is titled “Home Again” which could be a reference to the Season 4 episode “Home” or it could just refer to the fact that this is a revival and our characters are again, home. Possibly referring to the fact that they seem to going back to DC according to pictures taken on set. Honestly, I can’t do much more than make educated guesses at this point.
When Is Filming Happening?
June 8th – August 14th in Vancouver, BC (that’s in Canada).
Who’s In It?
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are both back to reprise their roles as Mulder and Scully. Series regulars such as William B. Davis, Mitch Pileggi, and later season stars like Annabeth Gish and Jeff Gulka (Gibson Praise), are all listed on the call sheet. Additionally, it was recently announced that Community‘s own Joel McHale had been cast. He too has been tweeting vague pictures, but no one has really given much information. (Maybe this means there’s a role for the self-proclaimed X-Files fanatic and reoccurring Community guest star, Kumail Nanjiani? Though according to this tweet, maybe not…)
According to IMDb, it looks like former writer Glen Morgan is returning to both write and direct for the revival. Series creator Chris Carter is also penning and directing a few episodes according to IMDb and a picture he posted to his Instagram. Darin Morgan and James Wong are listed as executive producers, so hopefully they’re back to write an episode or two as well.
The Director of Photography is Joel Ransom who shot multiple episodes of seasons 4 and 5 of the original run. Hannibal‘s costume designer, Christopher Hargadon, is also serving as the costume designer for the revival.
Also Anderson’s daughter Piper Maru Klotz (who was born during Season 2 of The X-Files‘ original run and spent a good chunk of her childhood running around the set) is even working in the art department.
Unfortunately, Vince Gilligan is not returning to the franchise. I’m sure he has his plate full. Furthermore, the previous X-Files crew that have since moved to Castle, like cinematographer Bill Roe and producer/director Rob Bowman, will also not be returning.
How Do I Keep Up To Date?
I personally recommend the following sources to follow along with shooting.
David Duchovny’s Twitter and Instagram — Duchovny’s tweets are a mixture of scheduled Aquarius promos from his social media team and random iPhone photos he shares with his audience. He’s even been doing a few Q&As recently, again mostly Aquarius related. However, I do not doubt that he will post some gems during production.

Gillian Anderson’s Twitter — Anderson pretty much broke the internet on Friday when she posted her recently dyed red locks (wig or no wig…). She doesn’t tweet often and most of the time it is her social media person, but if I expect anything from Gillian Anderson, it’s squeal-worthy selfies and flirtatious tweets to her co-star.

Chris Carter’s Instagram — So far Carter has only posted one vague picture of a slate citing a “UFO test.” Oh, and a picture of Duchovny & Anderson’s director’s chairs that say “Mulder” & “Scully,” respectively… just like everyone else. However, I hope for a slew of more photos from the show’s creator.

Glen Morgan’s Twitter — Thus far, Morgan has been the best source for all things behind the scenes. The writer’s heart-felt, tear-jerking tweets have caused me much excitement. Also he gets into some really fun Twitter banter with fans.

X-Files News Twitter — X-Files News is an amazing source for great comprehensive news of all things related to the franchise. Additionally, this is a great place to get all of the revival info you are seeking if you don’t feel like constantly checking up on multiple sources. It’s especially helpful if you’re looking for on-set photos of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, which there are an emotionally overwhelming amount of.
