Your Favorite Tabletop Games Are Now Your Favorite Apps

Nothing can replace the satisfaction of hearing a shuffling deck of cards or dice rolling across a table, or the fun of a game night spent laughing with friends. But for those times when you find yourself without opponents, official app versions of some of your favorite tabletop games can come to the rescue when you have a board game itch to scratch.

So if you’re winding down before bed or need a game to keep you occupied on a long trip, these recently released board-games-turned-apps for iOS put your favorite games in your pocket to play anytime, anywhere.

Lanterns: The Harvest Festival

Lanterns AppLanterns: The Harvest Festival not only made an appearance on Game the Game and kicked off season 4 of TableTop, but now, it’s also making its debut on your favorite screen: your smartphone.

Lanterns is a tile placement game where players match colors to obtain lanterns and then use those lanterns in specific combinations (three pair, four of a kind, and one of each color) to earn Honor points. The player with the most Honor wins at the end of the game. Thanks to the easy-to-use app, you won’t be fumbling with lantern cards or tabulating points, although you might get distracted by how pretty those glowing lanterns look floating on the water.

$4.99, iPhone/iPad, multiplayer and pass-and-play available

PaperbackYou’ve probably heard good things about this creative word game that got its start on Kickstarter. Paperback has proven to be so popular that the card game is often sold out online, so if you’ve been hoping to get your hands on it, look no further than the App Store.

The new Paperback app from Fowers Games combines word building with deck building. The app does all the hard work of the table setup and card shuffling for you, leaving your brain and hands free to wrestle over letters to spell high-scoring words. Make words with letter cards that have special abilities to wrack up your money to buy more cards for your deck and novels that are worth points at the end of the game.

$3.99, iPhone/iPad, multiplayer play coming soon

Sushi Go!

Sushi Go! AppYou’ve got a party in your pocket with the mobile version of this Gamewright card game. If you thought the physical card game was fast-paced, just wait until you see the sushi zoom by in the Sushi Go! app. For players already familiar with the rules, three rounds of the drafting card game can fly by in less than five minutes. The card shuffling and point tabulation is done for you, so all you have to do is choose cards and think about how sushi does sound good for dinner tonight.

First time on the sushi conveyor belt? The app comes with a helpful tutorial (in the form of a sushi chef octopus) and tips for remembering the details on the cards you’re drafting. You can also watch the TableTop episode featuring Sushi Go! for a card collecting crash course.

$4.99, iPhone/iPad, multiplayer and pass-and-play available
