Wizards of the Coast Pulls Out All the Stops With the New Mystic Class for D&D 5e

This week’s Unearthed Arcana finally brings full rules for the Mystic in your games of D&D.

Mystics have unlocked the full potential of their minds to the point where they can use both Psionic Talents and Psionic Disciplines. Psionic Talents are abilities the Mystic always has access to and can be used at any time, without spending resources. Think of these the same way you look at Cantrips. If Psionic Talents are similar to cantrips, then Psionic Disciplines are similar to spells. A Mystic knows a number of disciplines (based on their level) and can use these disciplines by expending Psi Points. While Psionic Disciplines function similar to spells, it is important to remember that Mystics are NOT spell casters.

Before looking at the different subclasses, I want to really highlight my favorite part of the Mystic class. Unlocking the full potential of your mind is not without drawbacks. People creating Mystics must roll on a quirk table allowing you to role play your Mystic with one of the quirks associated with this mental strengthening, my favorite being “You pick a new name each day.”

ORDER OF THE AVATAR

Mystics of the Order of the Avatar focus on mastering emotions. This complete mastery over their own emotions give Mystics of this order the ability to influence the emotions of those around them.

This emotional influence inspires their party to greater abilities. A Mystic of the Order of the Avatar is able to heighten the awareness of their party, project an aura of resilience and even project an aura of speed, allowing all members of the party to take the Dash action as a bonus action on their turn.

The second way this translates is through the Psionic Disciplines of the Order of the Avatar. Each of these disciplines focuses on an emotional state and the way that a dedicated Mystic of this order can manipulate it. This can take the shape of amplifying the fears and doubts of an enemy, or inspiring your allies by fortifying their courage, joy, or even rage.

My favorite part of these disciplines is that unlike casting spells, a failed attempt at manipulating an enemy’s emotions leaves no trace that you were trying to do so in the first place. Talk about some great role play potential.

ORDER OF THE AWAKENED

Mystics of the Order of the Awakened seek to unlock the full potential of their mind. They focus their energy on bending the minds of others and using their own mastery to unleash powerful psionic attacks.

This mastery gives the ability to become proficient in additional skills, detect or create an imprint on objects (allowing for cool spying possibilities), forcing your enemies to have disadvantage versus saving throws and being able to alter your physical self into a ghostly apparition.

The Psionic Disciplines for the Order of the Awakened fall into two different camps. The first is powerful psionic attacks which focus almost exclusively on dealing damage. The second is bending the minds of your enemies to plant suggestions or even false visions.

ORDER OF THE IMMORTAL

Mystics of the Order of the Immortal use the strength and clarity of their mind to augment their physical bodies. This allows them to strengthen their own defense or even augment their physical form into living weapons.

This mastery of the physical form manifests with abilities that boost survivability. Earning an additional 1 HP every time you earn a level, creating temporary HP at the start of every turn, trading your psychic focus to take half damage and even the ability to stabilize yourself and come back with HP if you are ever reduced to 0.

The Psionic Disciplines for the Order of the Immortal continue this trend of mastery over the physical form. From the more obvious healing and physical transformation (including the ability to be Ant-Man, seriously) to the cool hybridization of animal traits, these disciplines give a lot of flexibility. Have you ever wanted to have corrosive alien blood that burns people who attack you? Well, now’s your chance.

ORDER OF THE NOMAD

Mystics of the Order of the Nomad have unlocked their memory and as such, attempt to learn everything about everything. This includes knowledge of the multiverse and the underlying structure of all things.

This thirst for knowledge and full awareness of their own memories manifests through their ability to gain two proficiencies in tools, skills, or languages every time they finish a long rest. Additionally, their studies into the multiverse give them strong teleportation abilities, even being able to use a reaction to teleport away from an attack. Take that dragon breath!

The Psionic Disciplines for the Order of the Nomad focus heavily on the knowledge you have gained as a Mystic of this order. You can imbue a ranged weapon with basic sentience, or use your knowledge of the multiverse to quickly teleport or even expand your own perceptions.

ORDER OF THE SOUL KNIFE

Mystics of the Order of the Soul Knife sacrifice the breadth of knowledge other Mystics can gain and in exchange, they focus exclusively on one specific psionic talent; the Soul Knife.

The soul knife is exactly what it sounds like, knives of energy that project from both of your fists. Yes, this means that you are basically a D&D Protoss Zealot. All of this focus gives a variety of improvements to your soul knife combat as you progress through levels.

The Order of the Soul Knife does not have any Psionic Disciplines, but followers of this order can still freely select disciplines from any of the other orders.

ORDER OF THE WU JEN

Mystics of the Order of the Wu Jen seclude themselves in order to hone their mind to control reality around them. In practical terms, this allows them to control the four elements, hurl objects with their mind, and even alter reality to fit their desires.

This control over reality manifests in a few interesting ways, such as being able to eliminate a creature’s elemental resistance, grant yourself an immunity to elemental damage types, and even learn spells.

The Psionic Disciplines for the Order of the Wu Jen play into this mastery over reality. Your control over all of the elements allows you to create an Elemental which follows your commands, and your mastery over reality gives you control over the weather.

Are you excited to try out a Mystic in your next D&D campaign? Let us know in the comments!
