You probably already play board games, but in case you needed a few more reasons to start playing, you’re in luck! Our favorite tabletop gaming enthusiast Wil Wheaton was on KPCC’s AirTalk recently discussing GenCon, his current favorite games, and why the social aspects of gaming are more important than what you play. Check out the highlights from the 13-minute interview below.
Monopoly is fun but ultimately other board games are more fun
While many people first think of classics like Monopoly and Scrabble when they hear the words “board game,” Wil discussed why board games can be so much more than Monopoly. He mentions that Monopoly often takes longer to complete than is actually fun for the players. He’s not wrong. Plus, when games like Settlers of Catan came around which involve strategy and actively keeping players involved throughout, a whole new generation was introduced to tabletop gaming as “a satisfying hobby.” So expand your definition of board games and you’ll discover a whole new world!
We are in a renaissance in tabletop gaming
There are several reasons why Wil says we’re in a tabletop gaming renaissance. Because of crowdfunding, someone with a good idea and good reputation can fund games online. In fact, the games category on Kickstarter has raised over $400 million. Which means there are games out there for everyone! Plus, with conventions like GenCon and communities all over the Internet, you’ll have no trouble finding a group of people to game with. YouTube and podcasts lower the barrier of entry by making all types of games more accessible for newbies. Oh, and we all think TableTop has made a pretty big influence on the explosion of board games as well.
What you play isn’t as important as playing
Back in the day, video games provided social interactions by inviting friends over to all gather around a TV and play. But with the ability to play with anyone over the internet, the social aspect of gaming has changed. Wil brought up how we treat people and play differently when we’re playing games face to face versus through a screen. In many modern video games, we lose the social aspect. Many people make a point to get together with friends to play board games, bringing back the social aspects of gaming. This isn’t limited to tabletop gaming. Pokemon GO has social aspects even though players are all individual. Learning how to game socially and be a good competitor is more important than which type of game you’re playing.
Here are Wil’s Top 4 Game Picks
