If you haven’t played the original Knights of the Old Republic, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Go download it. It’s $9.99 on Steam. There’s really no excuse to never have played BioWare’s critically acclaimed Star Wars adventure RPG. Yes, I may be fangirling a little, and yes I may have had some caffeine this morning, but coffee or not I would still highly recommend this game.
In Knights of the Old Republic, set 4000 years before the original trilogy, you play a traveler aboard a Republic ship when it falls under attack by Darth Malak’s forces. The protagonist can’t remember much of their past, but knows they have a connection to the Jedi Bastila. You join Bastila’s quest to defeat Darth Malak by following the Sith lord through a series of mysterious star maps. But where do these maps lead? Well, you’ll just have to play to find out.
The game is beloved among fans because of the storytelling. You could customize your character to be male or female, focus on any weapon you wanted, any powers you wanted, and you could go light side or dark side. Your alignment, skills, and decisions could drastically effect the story, so playing it through a second time could result in a completely different experience.
I will also tell you this: The game has one of the best plot twists of all time. I’m not exaggerating. Many game critics will tell you the same. In fact, you probably shouldn’t read any comments about this article until you’ve played it.
So what’s all the hubub now? Atlanta-based development group Poem Studios decided to take it upon themselves to create Knights of the Old Republic: Apeiron, a remastered version of KOTOR with updated graphics supported by the Unreal Engine. The game will have all the original content, vocals, and music; but additionally will also include new worlds, missions, and companions. It’s almost more like a mod rather than a game. You will have to own a legal copy of the original game to play the new version, but the update will be 100% free. Check out the video above from Twitch streamer MrMattyPlays to see the first alpha footage from the game.
I’m all for the updated engine. KOTOR came out in 2003, so the graphics are indeed dated. The one screenshot I’ve seen of Dantooine is just gorgeous. What concerns me though is the added content. Poem has some pretty big shoes to fill when it comes to matching BioWare’s level of storytelling. They’re kinda famous for it. I will give them the benefit of the doubt because this reboot is clearly a labor of love, not profit. If these people love the original just as much as I do, then I know it’ll be in caring hands. Let’s just hope those hands are talented.
This reboot is still in the very early stages, so it could be a few years before we get a release. In the meantime, check out the gallery below for more images of Knights of the Old Republic: Apeiron and tell us what you think in the comments!
