How to Celebrate Pi Day

Craving Pi á la mode? Feeling irrational but well rounded? Thinking constantly of your cutie π? That’s because Pi Day is just around the corner! Yes, the yearly extravaganza that celebrates Pi (or π) and the world’s love of math is March 14!

The Pi(e) Basics Almost every Pi Day involves a little pie! In addition to the two pi(e)s sounding the same, pies are also circular, so you and your fellow math nerds can discuss your love of diameters while eating away at a delicious, delicious circumference.

Pi Countdown Feeling like taking your pi pies to the next level? Why not have a pie drop at 1:59 pm on Pi Day? 3/14 at 1:59 pm = 3.14159, a common rounded version of pi. You and your friends can count down like it’s New Year’s as 1:59 gets closer and closer. Then, at the exact right moment, instead of dropping a New Year’s ball, drop a pi pie from a tall place and ring in a new pi year for great discoveries in math!

Pi-ñata Having a party after you drop all those pies? Why not have pi-ñata at your celebration and fill it with math games, circular prizes or even little cans of pi-napple?

There’s even a pi trainer to help you memorize hundreds of digits. According to Guinness World Records the world record for number of memorized pi digits is held by Chao Lu of China, who memorized pi to 67,890 places, but you can just start out with ten. But who knows? Maybe you’re the next Chao Lu!

The Life of Pi Finally, after all the craziness of an epic Pi Day almost behind you, wind down the day by watching π, the dark tale of a mathematician who slowly go crazy. You can also watch The Life of Pi, which has very little to do with Pi, but hey, it’s got the right name!
