Freddy vs. Jason. Alien vs. Predator. King Kong vs. Godzilla. We might be seeing plenty of heroes duel this year, from Dawn of Justice to Civil War, but it’s the brawls between monsters that always feel most cathartic. Even if you’re a fan of the Ring and the Grudge, though, this is very probably the fight you never knew you wanted to see. That you needed to see. Watch its cursed trailer below, and seven seconds later, you might just die of excitement.
As the narrator so gravely intones at the end, this is indeed Sadako vs. Kayako. It’s about the demon girls of both J-horror franchises coming to a clash–and the handful of unlucky humans with the undesirable circumstance of standing between them. Oh, and naturally it features Seikima-II, too.
Who are they? Well, maybe imagine what KISS would be like as villains on a Super Sentai show. Adding to the storied marriage of metal and the macabre that’s seen Alice Cooper serenade Jason Voorhees and Dokken square off against Freddy Krueger, you can watch Seikima-II’s front man, Demon Kakka, plug the movie while Sadako and Kayako writhe in torment around him.
If you’ve got no skin in this fight, or just need a quick recap, know that both the Ring and the Grudge franchises revolve around the notion of curses being viral, and continually spread by victims. In the Grudge (or Ju-On in Japan), Kayako is an angry spirit who bedevils a family who’s moved into the house that was the site of her murder. Then, she more-or-less follows them outside to haunt all those they interact with. In the Ring (or Ringu in Japan), Sadako is an evil spirit who haunts a video tape. She’ll kill anybody who watches her tape, unless they then show the tape to somebody else within seven days and shirk her death sentence. If you’re wondering how their match could shake out, the movie’s official Tumblr has provided some illustrations. Hint: it’ll involve the use of a Boston Crab.
Which evil spirit should win? What other J-horror monsters would you kill to see in a “Vs.” flick? Can you hold a VHS tape without shivering, now? Sound off in the talkback!
