What’s funny is that there’s already loads of salty language in Thrones. F-words, S-words, and other words that would raise your momma’s eyebrow are employed liberally in the lords and ladies’ parlance. Why, that’s one way the series sets itself apart from typical sword & sorcery. Nevertheless, there’s something so rich about Samuel L. Jackson’s flair for cursing. And when HBO asked the B.M.F. to summarize the first five seasons of GoT for anybody who hadn’t yet hopped on the bandwagon, he took to the task with all the big personality he’s legendary for.
Here’s the “uncensored” Beginner’s Guide: offering succinct breakdowns of the War of the Five Kings, Red Wedding, Black Wedding, the Conquest of Slaver’s Bay, and the Battle of Hard Home in a fashion only Jackson ever could. It’s of extra appeal for newbies, actually, since the man sometimes known as Master Windu coyly teases around most blatant spoilers, preserving the thrill of shock and surprise for a proper binge watch. Peep it, and hear some of Jackon’s new, nasty nicknames for King Joffrey, Ramsay Snow, and all the other jerks who’ve made life that much harder in Westeros.
Jackson’s always wears his geekiness on his sleeve, and you definitely can feel his enthusiasm for Thrones flaring out of every frame in this clip. Of course, that isn’t always the case when celebrities get brought in to explain the complicated lore and lingo of a fantasy world. Remember when Ice-T recorded a Dungeons & Dragons audio book? He may have laid off the sailor’s jargon during the actual breakdown, but he was certainly forthcoming with it during a segment about the project on his podcast.
Should we seek more takes on fantasy by other unexpected celebrities? Which House would Jackson lord over? What would Ice’s character alignment be? Hit the talkback!
