Unlock! Escape Adventures has just won Game of the Year As d’Or for 2017 at the International Games Festival in Cannes, France, suggesting that the soon-to-be-released cooperative card game might have a bright future ahead of itself.
“All my thanks to the Festival des Jeux As d’Or jury for selecting Unlock! as their Game of the Show! We are extremely proud to have received this honor, which rewards the whole team for their hard work and dedication,” said game designer Cyril Demaegd, from Space Cowboys, the company that published Unlock!, according to Dice Tower News.
“Personally, I am a huge fan of escape room games involving thematic riddles and the pressure of the clock, and we’re thrilled that we were able to recreate the escape room experience in a cooperative card game.”
For those just hearing of the game, Unlock! is a cooperative, card-based, ‘escape the room’ game that uses a companion app to help players find clues, make guesses, and eventually break out into freedom.
Each Unlock! deck contains 60 cards that depict a number of different things like maps, objects, clues, and puzzles, that 2-6 players must use to figure out how to escape the room in under 60 minutes.
To pull that off, players need to work with the cards to eventually come up with a code that they enter into the free companion app that ‘unlocks’ the door and allows them to escape.
While the creators of the game claim that Unlock! requires no rulebook reading, opting to use a playthrough tutorial like a video game instead, it’s still always easier to watch the game unfold to get a grasp how it works.

Right now, Unlock! hasn’t been fully released yet, but the good news is that Android users can download a completely free demo of the game and the companion app, including the 10-card tutorial, to give it a shot.
Asmodee expects to ship Unlock! sometime between April and June, though an exact date has yet to be set in stone.
