Perhaps it’s because Game of Thrones is the most successful example of an especially rare breed of show, the adult-oriented fantasy adventure, but there’s something infinitely delightful about seeing its grim characters and intense moments presented in the style of family-friendly animation. Fan artists have previously shown how Thrones might look as a Disney musical, or conversely how the Disney princesses might look if they played the queens, ladies, and Wildling women warriors in Thrones‘ cast.
Artist Alex Cho has gone for that same kind of dark/light dichotomy in this set of fantastic digital paintings, but used a more modern toon aesthetic reminiscent of Pixar flicks like Brave. Or maybe more specifically like Hotel Transylvania. Indeed, Cho is a Visual Development Artist at Sony Pictures Animation, and these pieces very much look like conceptuals from some animated adaptation of Thrones‘ sixth season at the studio.
All the most striking moments are here. Arya’s blinding inside the Hall of Faces. Jon Snow’s face-off with House Bolton’s Calvary. Hodor’s last stand. Sansa’s steely-eyed revenge, and then Cersei’s colder approach to it. Most impressive, perhaps, is the piece recreating Dany’s fiery “business meeting” with the Dothraki board of execs. Cho even reached a few seasons back to recreate the aftermath of her equally-incendiary exchange with the Unsullied’s original owners…
