It’s no secret that Danny DeVito is a little guy with a booming voice. Aside from the countless live action roles he’s performed, DeVito has lent his distinctive sound to a bunch of animated films. You know, like Hercules, The Lorax, and Space Jam, just to name a few. It turns out people are pretty into his voice acting, because there’s a Change.org petition going around for DeVito to be cast as cuddly, yet hard-boiled Pikachu in the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game, Detective Pikachu.
The petition has over 40,000 signatures, and it needs to reach 50,000 in order to be formally submitted to Nintendo for consideration. But wait! This is the best part: some slick and savvy YouTube user made a fan video of a Danny DeVito-voiced game trailer. It’s features audio from DeVito’s role as Penguin in Batman Returns, dubbed over the oddly mature voice that Pikachu has in the original Japanese trailer. In my humble opinion, DeVito’s voice gives Pikachu a gruffness that makes it sound like he’s always scheming, which is perfect for crime-solving.
While DeVito himself hasn’t yet responded to the masses of support, we hope he’s up for the challenge! If his career is anything to go by, the guy likes things to be a mixed bag. We might be in luck.
