Today Warner Bros. released a trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a new film written by J.K. Rowling. The movie is the first film installment in the Harry Potter universe that isn’t actually about Harry Potter. That’s the neat thing about “universes.” They’re big enough to build stories about lots of people in a plethora of settings. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is actually a fictional textbook penned by fictional author Newt Scamander.
The trailer doesn’t tell us much about the plot, but here’s what we have so far. The story follows Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) in 1920’s America. Scamander has come to New York City with a suitcase full of magical creatures. Now the government of witches and wizards are concerned because the case has been opened and some of these beasts have escaped.
However…the trailer doesn’t actually show any of these beasts. We only glimpse a moment of some destruction to a single room. There is one shot of action where we see Scamander unleash magic from his wand, but that’s it. At this point, it’s hard to get a solid grasp on what to expect from the film. Is it dark? Is it whimsical? Is it intended for children?
