The Pull’s Pull: Our Top Picks for December 2nd

Here are our picks for this day of Pulls. Check out the video above for even more recommendations!

Whitney’s Pick

Barrier #1
By Brian K. Vaughan, Marcos Martin and Muntsa Vicente
Brian K. Vaughn and Marcos Martin

barrier_01_bigMy pick for this week is Brian K. Vaughan’s new comic, Barrier. You really have no excuse not to read this stunning, 53 page first issue because you can get it for free (or for however much you’d like to pay!) at Panel Syndicate. Barrier #1 is a promising introduction to a story about border control and illegal immigration, but with a sci-fi twist that I can’t wait to see more of. Don’t let the pages in Spanish put you off if you don’t speak the language, I found it easy enough to navigate the plot using my broken Spanglish, though I’ll definitely be re-reading it with a translator app soon!

The Private Eye
By Brian K. Vaughan, Marcos Martin and Muntsa Vicente
Brian K. Vaughn and Marcos Martin

PrivateEyeThe truth is, Whitney and I fought over picking Barrier #1 this week, the brand-new comic from Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin’s experimental digital comics site Panel Syndicate; but this is the perfect day to spotlight it because today also sees the release of the Hardcover edition of Private Eye, the series they started the site with! This sci-fi near-future tale (in an environment gorgeously brought to life by Martin and colorist Muntsa Vicente) takes place in a world where a cataclysmic social media event (the time “the cloud burst”) has created a society where everyone is in disguise and taking a picture of a citizen without their consent is a felony offense. It’s gorgeous, rewarding, award-winning and at long last has made the jump to print. Tailor-made for Christmas lists everywhere!

Hector’s Pick

Totally Awesome Hulk #1
Story by Greg Pak, Art by Frank Cho
Marvel Comics

totallyAwesomeHulkLong-time Hulk sidekick, and fan favorite character, Amadeus Cho steps into the spotlight as the new Hulk! The 7th smartest character on the planet is already doing things totally different and totally awesome. Writer Greg Pak throws us right into the action and insanely talented artist Frank Cho brings Hulks, She-Hulks, dinosaurs and Lady Hellbenders with him! And the best part is, Hulk is Asian and smart and sexy and fun and the strongest one there is, and that’s HUGE. There aren’t too many massively iconic Asian superheroes, so to have Amadeus step up is major. Actually, it’s TOTALLY AWESOME.
