It’s getting closer and closer to Halloween! While you’re busy putting the final touches on your costume, carving pumpkins, and nailing down those final details for the perfect Halloween party, you need something to help get you in the spooky spirit. Sure, you could watch a scary movie or campy Halloween flick, but it’s 2016, and it’s all about the podcasts now, kids. So what are some killer podcasts for you to get into this Halloween season? I’m so glad you asked…
If you haven’t yet jumped into the podcast Lore, now is the time. Each episode is usually 30 minutes or less, and tells the true stories behind some of your favorite ghost stories, urban legends, and some of the craziest tales humanity has collected over the years. It’s like host Aaron Mahnke says, “sometimes truth is more frightening than fiction.” With episodes that range from unsettling to terrifying to simply baffling, Lore’s got something for everyone. Plus, this podcast is on the cusp of huge things. Not only is it simply a rad podcast, but it’s also getting turned into a TV show. What better time to jump on the Lore bandwagon than Halloween?
If you’re looking for something a bit lighter, look no further than Siblings Peculiar (and that’s pronounced peck-you-lair, thankyouverymuch). This podcast is about siblings Adam and Sarah Peculiar, the children of two famous–but missing (and definitely not dead)–paranormal investigators. Adam and Sarah interview a litany of guests versed in all thing supernatural, weird, conspiratorial, and paranormal. From ghost hunters to soul-sharers to actual ghosts (sort of), there are loads of guests to truly rip the blinders off your eyes and finally show you THE TRUTH. Adam and Sarah are played by Adal Rifai (who you may know as Chunt from Hello from the Magic Tavern) and Sadieh Rifai, and the show is 100% improvised and utterly hilarious.
If you’re looking for more of a serious search for the truth in the paranormal, this is the podcast for you. Black Tapes is a docudrama podcast from Pacific Northwest Stories that follows a journalist’s search for truth in the midst of crazy, terrifying stories. This show is seriously spooky, and the stories will have you on the edge of your seat. It’s a show that blurs the lines between reality and fiction, and takes you right into the middle of the horror rather than simply re-telling terrifying tales. So this is definitely one to not listen to alone in the dark! This podcast is a giant adrenaline rush, and will have you chomping at the bit for the next episode.
This podcast is in a similar vein to Lore, but has a broader focus than Mahnke’s show. Here Be Monsters focuses on real stories of the unknown and fear, but the variety makes it a diverse and fascinating podcast to listen to. This show has been around for a bit, so you’ll have lots of episodes to explore before you run out of spooky, weird, unsettling, brainy, but always interesting content.
Guys. Limetown. GUYS. I can’t say enough about this podcast. Limetown is like a crazy mix of Welcome to Night Vale, Serial, and The X-Files (with perhaps a touch of American Horror Story: Roanoake), and it’s one of the coolest podcasts out there. It focuses on the disappearance of the 300 people in the city of Limetown, Tennessee and journalist Lia Haddock’s exploration into the tragedy. The show is a seven-part series that tells the story of Lia’s investigation of the spooky and inexplicable disappearance, and it’s so compelling that it will make it really hard to remember that the show is simply a work of fiction.
So whether you’re looking for a history lesson, a journey into the darkest places of the human mind, a bit of a supernatural laugh, or to get lost into some scary stories, these podcasts are certain to be the perfect additions to your Halloweeen celebrations.
