Barely out for a month, and Overwatch has already inspired enough fan art to fill a pop art museum (and that’s even without counting the… ahem… more amorous interpretations). Blizzard pointedly didn’t include a story mode in the game itself, as if to challenge players to figure out their own plots to drop the characters into. And yes, that ball was most certainly picked up and ran with.
Here’s just a small sample of the voluminous tributes floating around online–and only the ones concerning Overwatch‘s de facto mascot, Tracer. In the art below, everybody’s favorite cheeky cockney gets a punkish makeover in an edgy graffiti style that’d fit right in with Tank Girl. There are also some pieces focusing on her relationships with other Overwatchmen; from a hyperactive fascination with Soldier 76 to a dangerous potential romance with Widowmaker. Most appealing, perhaps, are the ones reinterpreting the lass through a variety of animation styles. There’s an anime look, a photo-real look, a 2D sprite look, and even a look recalling Bruce Timm’s signature toons.
There are video tributes, as well. And they get even more specific–like, right down to the particulars of post-match reviews. Think those “Play of the Game” highlight reviews are corny? You’ll be delighted to know there are more spoof videos of it than any human being could ever possibly process. Here’s one that overdubs SpongeBob and Patrick for some Bikini Bottom shenanigans that somehow show why Tracer’s British cheekiness can land her in hot trouble with real ‘Mericans like Soldier 76…
Is Tracer your #1 gal? Do any of these tickle you in just the right spot? Or is there other fan art you’d rec first? Drop ’em in the talkback. We’d love to feature ’em.
