Here’s the skinny: back in 2006, there was a YouTube sensation by the name of lonelygirl15. She was a regular 16-year-old girl named Bree Avery who battled with teen angst, and poured her emotional turmoil into a video blog for the world to see. Yeah, that sounds like pretty routine stuff, except it was really one of the first YouTube breakout videos of its kind to create an audience around the daily life of a teenage girl.
But when the blog failed to update on YouTube, fans of the show turned into amateur sleuths who spent every waking hour discussing lonelygirl15 on message boards. Where had she gone? Who was she, really? As it turned out, lonelygirl15 was not named Bree at all, and more importantly, the whole thing was a hoax. Lonelygirl15 was the fictional character of Jessica Lee Rose who grew up in New Zealand, and later studied acting at the New York Film Academy. Like any other acting job, she was employed by industry professionals. However, things didn’t end there.
After the fictional status of the show was revealed, the story continued and evolved into something way more complex. Bree’s situation became unique in the fact that she and her family were involved in a sinister secret cult known as The Order, in which bizarre things would happen on a day-to-day basis. Like, her parents would suddenly disappear. Or her boyfriend would suddenly disappear. Sound sort of terrifying? Eh, maybe back then.
Anyway, the show kickstarted Jessica Lee Rose’s career, and she now has a slew of TV credits. Also, Jessica has a juicy new project: she is reprising her role as Bree on lonelygirl15, for the first time in seven years! This is very interesting, partly because her character was killed in this finale (which included a whopping 12 segments), and partly because the internet audiences of today demand top notch content. And obviously there are thousands of quality webseries to compete with, many starring actors who are more well-known than Jessica Lee Rose.
So, it will be fascinating to see what happens with lonelygirl15, and her comeback. The two-minute video features Bree talking directly to the camera about being ‘selected.’ Although she claims, “there’s nothing to fear,” somehow, she instills a feeling of pure terror! That might just be me, though. You can make up your own mind.
