The New Justice League Movie Villain Appears!

The New Justice League Movie Villain Appears!

Warner Bros. has released new details on the upcoming Justice League movie including an official synopsis and logo. The movie, which is still over a year away, seems to be going forward as planned and DC is already working to generate some positive buzz with set visits and early details. The synopsis is not exactly full of surprises:

“Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.”

Absolutely no one is surprised by this news, but at least sentences like “Fueled by his restored faith in humanity…” make it seem like things will have a slightly less somber tone. There is also no mention of any unexpected cast members, which would make this a pretty small Justice League. Green Lantern and Hawkgirl are still on my short list of surprise cameos. I’m not counting them out.

Speaking of surprises, we’re getting word from several outlets including Comic Book Resources that the villain of the Justice League movie has been confirmed as “Steppenwolf.” If that name is not ringing any bells it’s because the character is obscure even by the most hardcore comics fans’ standards. I guess all the other major Justice League comics villains were already booked.

The character originated in the Jack Kirby created New Gods and has been around comics since the early 70’s. In a recent appearance, he was written by Geoff Johns who, coincidentally, is one of two folks put in charge of the DC movies going forward. In the comics, he’s been known to lead a gigantic dog cavalry into battle.  Oh, and he’s also immortal. We’ll see if that lasts. On screen, Steppenwolf did appear in 3 episodes of various DC animated series (in a variety of terrible costumes) and was also in a deleted scene from Batman v. Superman which you can watch below:

We’re also seeing news from various outlets including Collider that “Mother Boxes” play a big part in the film. These are apparently scattered around the Earth in the hands of Atlanteans, Amazons, and Humans. Somehow this plot line is reminding me of another collectible objects plot in something else.

Finally, we got a look at the Justice League logo which is… words. Still, I could be wrong, but something about that font does seem a little fun right? Oh, DC, I’m such an addict. I look forward to watching this movie and consuming every little piece of media you release along the way.

Looking forward to the Justice League movie? Let us know in the comments. That’s also a good place to speculate on surprise Green Lantern casting too!
