Warner Brothers is now in negotiations with YA actor Ansel Elgort for the lead role in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie. After a bit of legal sparring, the rights to the D&D franchise movie have been settled and we’re starting to see progress on the film. Rob Letterman has been set to direct and a script has been penned by David Leslie Johnson, who wrote the screenplay for The Wrath of the Titans and has been slated to write the upcoming Aquaman movie.
Elgort, a man already with a name out of a D&D module, is best known for his roles in the Carrie reboot and the Divergent series. There’s speculation that Vin Diesel could play a role, since he’s long said he’d love to be involved in a D&D movie, as a fanatical roleplayer himself. Come to think of it Vin sounds like a fantasy name too. (Check him out playing with the Critical Role and Nerdist folks here.)
Ain’t It Cool News claims to have gained access to an early version of the script. They’ve said that the plot looks like a standard “Object Quest style D&D story” i.e. a quest to find a powerful magical artifact. The working title on the script they have is: “DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: THE HAND OF CHAOS” and the lead character, presumably Ansel Elgort’s, is a long-haired man named Raven Hightower.
What do you think of the movie as it’s shaping up so far? What major elements of D&D are you excited to see on the big screen?
