Can we not call it a heist? It’s a CAPER! Last week, Geeky & Sundry hosted a special trailer screening with Caper creator Amy Berg and cast members Abby Miller (Justified), Beth Riesgraf (Leverage, Criminal Minds), Hartley Sawyer (Glory Daze, Young & the Restless), and Harry Shum Jr. (Glee.) While there is no shortage of superhero movies in the world, Caper promises to offer something new– a focus on the alter egos. Let’s learn more about the superheroes from the actors who play them!
Penny Blue played by Abby Miller: The mastermind behind the crimes. “She’s a genius. I always get typecasted,” joked Abby Miller. Penny is the only non-superhero in the group but she steals a super suit in order to fight crime. Penny might appear to be fragile, but she’s unstoppable in her giant suit! She is a mix of Tony Stark’s brains and toys with Robin Hood’s money problems. Regardless of where her moral compass points, Penny is the real heart of team and brings the superheroes together.
Alexia played by Beth Riesgraf: Try to imagine if Wonder Woman had a brief stint as an assassin. That’s the inspiration for this superheroine of the series! “She leaves her royal blood line to become an assassin,” Riesgraf explained, “and I wonder more about where she came from and why [she left]?” In hopes of leaving her dark and troubled past behind her, Alexia joins forces with the other supers and tries to live a semi-normal life. Sounds like Alexia might have a hard time reforming while committing crimes.
Dagr played by Hartley Sawyer: The Misfit from another dimension– a dimension where vikings still rule the world. Dagr is the twelfth of twelve sons and deals with the pressure of making a name for himself. Hartely poked fun of his character’s struggles and stated, “It’s easy to make fun of [Dagr’s] story; it’s all about daddy issues.” He might sound like a familiar hammer wielding superhero but Dagr’s also dealing with the very real world problem of finding a way to fit in.
Luke Washington played by Harry Shum Jr.: Luke is the boy scout of the Caper crew. Coming from another planet and possessing incredible power, he might just be the most super of the four heroes. However, his character was a bit of a mystery during the development stages of Caper. Berg explained, “Harry’s the perfect fit. On the page, his character wasn’t as developed until Harry came along.” While Luke Washington has several skills, Shum confirmed that his Caper character can’t exactly cut a rug– Luke Washington doesn’t dance on screen. (This season!)
With the characters covering the super power spectrum, how do they ever manage to fight together? “Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will get it. They form their own Scooby Gang,” explained Sawyer. The rest of the cast agreed with the Buffy comparison. Riesgraf added, “You see why each one hangs in there and connects with everyone else.” Penny, Alexia, Dagr, and Luke do share a common thread in that they are all victims of circumstance and simply trying to get by in a tough economy. Creator Berg summarized, “They don’t turn bad, but need to do bad things in order to survive.” Whether the main characters of Caper fight for justice or steal from the rich, the dynamic between the four characters promises some great adventures and an interesting take on the superhero story. Are the superheroes of Caper ultimately good or bad? You’ll have to decide for yourself when the series premieres!
