Superheroes and villains are just like everybody else…they love music just as much as we do. So, let us ponder: What if we got our hands on one of their iPods or mp3 players? What would we find? What would be at the top of their playlists? We’ll speculate, week after week, taking a guess at what each of character might be listening to on a day out and about fighting crime. First up, it’s Spider-Man!
What’s in Peter Parker’s playlist? Let’s take a look.
“Spiderwebs” – No Doubt
Call it cliché but Peter Parker knows a good spider song when he hears it. Throwing it back to the days of Ska and the start of Gwen Stefani’s career, this song captures the angst of wanting to get away from someone but not being able, not to mention a great beat and classic 90s vibes. It’s the perfect song to swing along to and clear your head after a long day of responding to needy citizens. Hey, even heroes can get tired of the hero routine after a long day.
After a long day of shooting photos for the Daily Bugle, and when the stress of saving the city and girl problems get the best of him, Peter needs a good wind-down song to listen to at home. This classic Coldplay song should be a perfect mood setter, and no doubt some lyrics the wall crawler might appreciate. Rest up, Spidey, the city could call on you again at any second.
“Mary Jane’s Last Dance” – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Good ol’ Web Head has an eclectic mix of music on his playlist, so let’s not count out some classic rock. Ok, so maybe this song is not-so-subtly referring to ANOTHER Mary Jane, but Peter Parker has always been obsessed with Mary Jane Watson. Odds are, this song reminds him of the life he has waiting for him back home. A hero still needs to be reminded of the people who are most important to him.
“My Girl” – The Temptations
Ok, this might be Aunt May’s favorite song…but so what? Peter Parker can dig the old school stuff too. This classic would be a great date night soundtrack for Peter and Mary Jane. You can’t deny Peter’s always been a sucker for the mushy romantic stuff, so it’s likely he throws this feel good love song on every now and then just to lighten up the room.
“Uptown Funk” – Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars
Just because he’s out fighting crime and snapping pics for the Daily Bugle, doesn’t mean Spider-Man doesn’t have time to catch up on the latest hit songs. This one is no exception. Who doesn’t like this song? Web head sure would love to kick some butt in a fight while jamming out to this current chart-topper. We all know he’d probably love to throw in a few sarcastic dance moves in between punches too.
“Lose Yourself” – Eminem
Every hero has their call to action…that big moment where everything falls on their shoulders. Doc Octopus is calling Spider-Man out in the middle of Times Square? Well, Peter Parker needs to get himself amped up. Why not throw a little Eminem on? Odds are, with this intense song fueling the fire, Doc Ock won’t stand a chance.
”Empire State of Mind”- Jay Z/Alicia Keys
Every New Yorker loves this anthem to their city…including Spider-Man. How can you not love a song that pays homage to the greatest city in the world? magine Spider-Man sitting atop the Empire State Building, sun setting across the horizon, the city safe and chaos-free. Now imagine Jay Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” blasting in the background and tell me Spidey doesn’t feel pretty darn good right about now.
“Stronger” – Kanye West
Heroes need training too. Fighting skills and strength don’t just come naturally, even if you’re bit by a radioactive spider. Peter Parker, without a doubt, needs a work out song. This one is it. How can you not feel like lifting some weights or sprinting or doing some calisthenics when this song is playing? But I hate to break it to you, Kanye, Spidey is better than you.
“Get Lucky” – Daft Punk
Another fairly recent hit radio song, but nonetheless a great song for Spider-Man to chill out while listening to it. This techno/pop hit would be the perfect song for Spider-Man to play on a busy work day, or maybe Peter Parker would listen to it in preparation for a big date with MJ…but I digress.
“Hero” – Chad Kroeger featuring Josey Scott
Alright, is this one too meta for you? Yes, we’re all aware of a certain stigma behind Chad Kroeger’s band, Nickelback, but this is a great song. Sorry, but you can’t NOT think of this song any time you see Spider-Man swinging through the streets of New York. It debuted with Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man film, and was a popular radio hit. Who says Spidey can’t be a little narcissistic every once in a while? He shouldn’t feel bad though right? I mean, they did write it for him.
