Super Mario Odyssey Trailer Gets a Feature Length Breakdown Video

Later this year, Super Mario Odyssey is coming to the Nintendo Switch, as the franchise finally revisits the glorious open world 3D gameplay of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. So far, Nintendo has only released a single three-minute teaser trailer for Super Mario Odyssey to whet our collective appetites. And as unlikely as it seems on the surface, that teaser may have told us more about the game than anyone initially suspected.

GameXplain has released a feature length breakdown video of the Super Mario Odyssey teaser trailer, and it seems to be a very through examination of the information contained in the footage. For starters, the video looked at the environments of each of the four levels featured within, and noted some small details like the ice in the desert world and the mechanical creatures in the forest level. More impressively, the video appears to have successfully argued that Mario is making his way between worlds in a ship that looks like a top hat, which has a globe that clearly suggests that the action is not taking place on Earth. In other words, that New York City inspired level isn’t necessarily what it appears to be on the surface.

One of the ideas raised in the video is that the hat shaped ship is connected to both the Crazy Caps shop seen in the desert and the apparently sentient hat that was revealed at the end of the original clip. If the theory is accurate, Mario’s traditional power ups in this game could include some of the various hats briefly glimpsed outside of Crazy Caps, including a football helmet and a sombrero. The entire video has many additional theories and a healthy dose of speculation. It’s well worth watching, but fair warning: it’s going to take just over 83 minutes to get through the entire thing.
