The playtest for the Star Trek Adventures RPG has just launched! Earlier this summer, we interviewed Chris Birch of Modiphius Entertainment about the upcoming playtest campaign, revealing how we gaming Trekkies can return to “where no one has gone before.” The time has finally come! Now you can join the vast, living campaign across Delta Quadrant yourself!
In July, Birch told us that the Star Trek Adventures playtest will not just be to give Trek fans an open beta of the rules, but to run the playtest as an ongoing, player-driven campaign. “All of your experiences will be running in one big plotline…and the actions and events of that campaign which the players lead us through are going to directly influence the plot. […] It’s not a standard playtest where we hand you a little pack of rules… go off and play a fight scene, tell us how it went. No, you’re actually in a story, so you’re part of a big, ongoing campaign. You’ll get the pack of rules and a story, and depending on which ship you picked, that story’s going to be different. And at the end of about a month, you’ll report on what happened and then that will influence the creation of the next playtest kit and the next storyline which will have changed based on what all the players on that ship did.”
We were amazed by how many luminaries of the RPG genre and of Star Trek fiction were involved (and continue to be involved) in creating this initial campaign. New York Times Bestseller author Dayton Ward and veteran Trek author Scott Pearson collaborated to create the campaign’s storyline, while legendary Dungeons & Dragons designer Shawn Merwin and a host of other RPG veterans are tackling the game design. This all-star team, including developer Nathan Dowdell and lead writer David F. Chapman, will craft the backbone of your adventures across the quadrant, but it’s still up to players to determine the course of the action.
The core rulebook will be released in summer 2017 after the conclusion of the playtest, but fans of The Next Generation may recognize where their continuing mission is slated to begin. The living campaign takes place in the Shackleton Expanse, an area of space vastly unexplored by both the Federation and the Klingons. Starbase 364, Narendra Station, named after the battle of Narendra III where the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-C was destroyed, serves as the keep on the borderlands for excursions out into the frontier of space.
As the crews of the U.S.S. Venture, U.S.S. Bellerophon, U.S.S. Thunderchild, explore strange anomalies and discover new life while uncovering an ancient civilization and mysterious technologies; those aboard the U.S.S. Lexington will shape historical events for those very ships. As a bonus for UK Trek fans, those attending Dragonmeet in London on Saturday will have the final chance to receive a free Captain Kirk or Captain Picard figure when they sign up for the Star Trek Adventures playtest.
If you want to know more about the game or sign up for the playtest campaign, you can visit the Modiphius website and jump right into the action! If you own a gaming store and want to register to host the playtest, you can visit their retailer page.
