Square Enix Offers an Update on KINGDOM HEARTS III and the FINAL FANTASY VII Remake

Few video game titles are more anticipated that Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts III and the Final Fantasy VII Remake. But if you were hoping to get your hands on them this year, it appears that those hopes may have been dashed.

Via Gematsu, the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu featured an interview with Tetsuya Nomura, the director of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts III. While he hinted that one or both of them may be given a progress spotlight at a press event later this year, he also indicated that both titles are far from finished. “We’re steadily progressing on production,” he said. “While we are making them, I apologize that the wait will be be a bit longer for Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake. I am very sorry, but to that degree I will make a game that will meet your expectations…The release of the titles themselves have still have a way to go.”

Regarding Kingdom Hearts III, Nomura mentioned that some of the currently unannounced worlds are now being worked on. “While I can’t make a sweeping statement because the development process is different from what we’ve done so far, there are still worlds untouched. Production is progressing on unannounced worlds, in a state that we cannot show them off. In terms of the state of development, there is still some way to go.”

This year is the 15th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts, and it’s been well over a decade since Kingdom Hearts 2 was released. In that long period of time, Disney has purchased Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm; which has made Kingdom Hearts fans excited about the possibilities for the next game in the saga. Of course, there are still plenty of Disney properties that haven’t been in the series yet, and although characters from Tangled and Big Hero 6 have already been confirmed for Kingdom Hearts III.
