Spellslingers Deck Recap: Two-Headed Giant with Day[9] vs. Alan Tudyk

This week’s Spellslingers Deck Recap continues the Two-Headed Giant episode, where Felicia Day and Alan Tudyk battled Ryon Day and Sean Plott. Last week, I spent some time on Felicia and Ryon’s decks, so this week, we’re taking a peek at what Alan and Sean played.

Although he had to take on the role of his worst nemesis to do so, Sean played a mellow Blue-White Prowess deck. Prowess is a fairly new mechanic that gives a creature +1/+1 every time that a noncreature spell is cast, until the end of the turn. Often, casting spells will trigger other effects too, like Seeker of the Way‘s lifelink or Mistfire Adept‘s ability to grant flying. All of this means that the already-solid creatures the deck contains can bloom into gigantic threats with some patient and well-timed spellslinging.

There are a few centerpiece creature cards that are especially likely to lead you to victory. Icefall Regent and Sunscorch Regent are a pair of dragons with very powerful abilities. Icefall will keep an opponent creature tapped as long as it’s around, and takes extra mana to be targeted by opponent spells. Sunscorch is buffed every time your opponent plays a card, and will increase your life total as well. Sage-Eye Avengers, while lacking a Hulk, have the power to bounce an opponent’s creature back to hand as long as its power is less than Avengers itself. These potent powers stall the opponent and stymie their strategies, giving you the time and board presence you need to rally for your finishing blow.

Considering the deck’s focus on Prowess, you would expect it to have some great noncreature spells, and it does not fail to impress. You might remember Citadel Siege and Valorous Stance from previous weeks’ recaps, but if not, they remain potent and versatile choice cards. Along with Ojutai’s CommandSandblast, and Silkwrap, you have a host of options to neutralize your enemy’s board without ever risking your valuable creatures. Since having the right solution to your problems is key for this deck, there’s also plenty of card draw in Treasure Cruise, Defiant StrikeJace, Ojutai’s Command, and Jeskai Sage. With the exception of Treasure Cruise (which draws an impressive three cards and can be cast with Delve), all these cards also have another purpose so you can continue to gain tempo over your opponent. Center Soul is a particularly good instant to activate Prowess, since it has Rebound and can be cast twice before being eliminated from the game.

In contrast to Sean, Alan’s deck fit well with his devil-may-care attitude when it comes to Magic. It’s a very straightforward, brash, and aggressive Mono Red Goblins deck, meant to rip the opponent apart before they can build any defense. Dragon Fodder and Hordeling Outburst do nothing but put out lots of goblin tokens, and they don’t need to do anything else. These synergize very well with the deck’s direct damage instants, Fiery Conclusion and Collateral Damage. They require a creature to be sacrificed in addition to their casting cost, but your 1/1 goblins are just asking to be burned up.

Impact Tremors is another great spell, which will ping your opponents every time a creature enters play under your control. With three copies in the deck, you could potentially deal 9 damage to face with just a single Hordeling Outburst. All of these cheap, aggressive spells are just dying to be played alongside Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh. Once you transform her with a couple well-timed red spells, she can expertly manipulate the board and even slap your opponent with an Emblem that will damage them every turn.

Goblin Piledriver only gets bigger with every goblin on the field and can provide a swift finish, attacking alongside three other goblins, this little 2-mana twerp will swing in for 7 damage. The remainder of the deck’s creatures have Dash, allowing you to dodge painful board clears and always have creatures to attack. There aren’t a lot of crazy spells in the deck, but three copies of Act of Treason mean that your opponent’s best defenders can turn into their worst nightmare at the drop of 3 mana.
