Anyone who has ever made cosplay from scratch knows that it can be extremely challenging to construct clothing without a pattern. It involves time, visualization, and a lot of trial and error (emphasis on the error). What makes the task so difficult is that clothing requires you to cut fabric in 2D that you later sew together to form something 3D. Many cosplayers utilize base clothing patterns to build on, but there aren’t a lot of pre-made, cosplay-specific patterns out there unless you want to be a Disney princess. But now, DC Comics and pattern company Simplicity have teamed up to release a set of DC Bombshells patterns based on Ant Lucia’s 1940’s inspired artwork.
Each pack comes with patterns for both the clothing and the accessories. So yes, you can make boot covers, belts, and even Batgirl’s hood. You can purchase the patterns in sizes 6-14 or 14-22. Best to measure yourself or your client before purchasing though. But the great thing about patterns is that they are reusable.
Right now, patterns are available for Supergirl, Wonder Woman, and Batgirl, but we do hope to see more since there are about a dozen bombshells including Stargirl, Catwoman, Zatanna, and Harley Quinn. Simplicity also has patterns for other fictional favorites like Deadpool, The Joker, Captain America, and Thor. Even if you can’t find what you’re looking for with Simplicity, try Etsy or an online cosplay community. Many cosplayers share their printable patterns online for little to no cost. Good luck, and happy sewing!
