Sailor Moon Crystal Premieres and Fills Us All with 90’s Nostalgia

Ready for a ‘90’s throwback? Sailor Moon is back in action! Anyone who was a fan of the 90’s anime series rejoiced this week with the premier of the long-awaited series revival. Sailor Moon Crystal is on Hulu right now! It is a remake, but it will differ somewhat from the original animated show, sticking more closely to the manga series.

So far only the first episode is available. The storyline is nearly the same as the original series’ first episode, making for an amazing study in how much animation has improved in the last twenty years. Check it out:

All the hype around the new series has made us want to go back and re-watch the original Sailor Moon, which is also available on Hulu. The show clearly has quite a legacy: Hailed as one of Japan’s most successful franchises of all time, it also revitalized the idea of magical girls fighting crime, leading to an explosive 90’s trend that included The Powerpuff Girls, Totally Spies!, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed and a slew of characters in Hayao Miyazaki’s films, includingPrincess Mononoke.

We’re not just celebrating a show here—we’re celebrating an entire genre of kickass female fighters! Pretty exciting stuff—but just how should you celebrate?
