October has finally arrived and it is officially time to get started on your Halloween costume. We’ve already had some great moments in pop culture this year, so why not pay homage to one of your personal favorites? Here’s a few ideas to help you get started:
The Ladies of Mad Max
Our new favorite feminist icon, Imperator Furiosa, is bound to be one of the most popular costumes of 2015. To stand out from the crowd, why not celebrate some of the other kick-ass ladies of Mad Max: Fury Road? “The Wives” are beautiful, strong, and willing to give their lives to escape from bondage. Their white/tan outfits could be very easy to put together at home using simple fabric (or a sheet) or a simple top/shorts combo that you can tear up. Make sure to age the material appropriately using tea or good old-fashioned dirt and grease. If you want to go above and beyond, you could even add a chastity belt.

“The Wives” aren’t the only group of awesome women in the film. You could also put together an ode to Furiosa’s clan, “The Many Mothers” aka “The Vuvalini”. No one will mess with you on Halloween if you’re dressed like one of these gun-toting, desert-dwelling fighters. Pick one of your favorite characters and use lots of aged layers, making sure to add a few key pieces like a (fake) rifle, goggles, canteens, and face scarves.
Couples Costume Idea: It wouldn’t take much to make a matching War Boys costume. A simple can of edible silver spray paint, a pair of goggles and some cargo pants should do the trick.
Water on Mars
Space fans all over the world celebrated the recent news that scientists had found evidence of flowing water on Mars. If you want a simple, yet geeky, costume, print off a picture of Mars (or buy a t-shirt) and hand out water bottles on Halloween. Not everyone will get the joke, but you’ll have your fellow science geeks chuckling.

Couples Costume Idea: Your partner could come as Pluto (that poor former-planet) or, in celebration of the release of The Martian, how about a Mark Watney homage?
Time Period Accurate Marvel Civil War
Another pun-y costume idea celebrates the upcoming release of Captain America: Civil War. Instead of dressing like the modern Avengers however, put together an outfit of your favorite Avengers in period Civil War clothing. This would be a fun way to add a touch of steampunk to your Halloween, like these custom action figures from Sillof.

This would be a more challenging costume to put together, but it’ll be worth the effort. Steampunk has become so popular that you can find of wealth of ideas for putting together an outfit online. This would also be great for a repeat wearing during your next convention.
Couples/Group Costume Idea: Bonus points for pairing up with your friends so you can create the whole team.
George R.R. Martin, Serial Killer
George R.R. Martin may look cuddly, but we fans know he is not to be trusted. He has killed off more characters than just about any other author out there and there’s bound to be more coming once The Winds of Winter is released.

Mr. Martin has become something of a serial killer when it comes to beloved characters, so how about doing a mash-up with another famous killer, like Hannibal or Dexter? Pick a few recognizable features from each (a beard and hat are a must) and stare intensely at everyone from the corner of the room.

Couples/Group Costume Idea: Have your friends come dressed up as dearly-departed Game of Thrones cast members. There are certainly plenty to choose from.
For years, men have been dressing up like Clark Kent mid-transition to Superman. With the upcoming release of Supergirl on CBS, why not add a feminine twist on this classic, easy costume? As we saw in the trailer, Kara’s shirt is pink instead of white, so find a Supergirl/Superman t-shirt and add a pink button-up shirt over it. Make sure to add her blond up-do and black-rimmed glasses. When people ask you what you’re dressed up as, flash them a peak of that infamous logo.

Couples Costume Idea: Your partner can come as any number of characters from the new universe (Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant, or a villain of the week).
Ever since the female-led Ghostbusters reboot was announced, fans have been obsessing over Director Paul Feig’s Twitter account. He’s posted a few gems, including the group shot with the Ecto-1 below. Filming has finally wrapped and we’re all eagerly awaiting the film’s release in July 2016. While we wait, find some lady friends and pay homage to our new favorite scientists. To put this together, try and find a gray jumpsuit or a matching long-sleeved shirt and pants. Find some orange gaffer’s tape (or duct-tape) to add the stripes to the shirt and boots. Add a belt, a pair of black gloves, and tall boots. You can find inflatable proton packs online, or you can always make your own using cardboard and some string. Add some attitude and you’ll have an instant classic.
