Our Five Favorite Uncharted Moments

Our Five Favorite Uncharted Moments

Uncharted 4 is finally here, and with all of the excitement surrounding its release, there’s also a bittersweet sadness when we remember that this is the last chapter in one of the most highly-regarded franchises in modern gaming. To celebrate, we’ve gathered five of the most memorable moments throughout the series.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune – Surprise Zombies

Although impressive for its time, the first entry in the series was still getting its sea-legs, so to speak. The game did have its moments though, especially towards the end of the game when Drake’s Fortune took an unexpected, supernatural turn. Nothing was more terrifying than when Drake, stuck in some sort of German bunker facility, is suddenly attacked by seething swarms of blood-thirsty zombies. No enemy encounter in the series since has been as terrifying.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception – Drake and Elena’s Reunion

Uncharted 3 is fraught with relationship issues. Drake’s antics often put the people he cares about in grave danger. This addiction to thrill-seeking is what puts a wedge between Nate and Elena in Uncharted 3. Washing ashore in Yemen after a harrowing encounter on a pirate-ridden cruise ship, a battered Nate seeks shelter with Elena in this touching scene, cementing the fact that they still love each other, despite their uncertain circumstances.

Uncharted 3 : Drake’s Deception- Plane Crash and Desert Walk

This plane scene was one of the first bits of Uncharted 3 shown to the public prior to its release, and for good reason. The plane crash and its aftermath show the series at its best. A mid-air firefight turns into a deliciously over-the-top action scene before settling into a slow-paced, introspective moment as Nate struggles through the desert to escape the wreckage.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – A Normal Life

We’d be remiss to skip this nostalgic interlude in the early hours of Uncharted 4. Exploring Nate’s attic, you’re given the chance to relive the memories of the past three adventures, and how cute is that nerf gun shoot-out? Heading down into the house proper, you get a glimpse of Drake and Elena’s wedding album, before heading downstairs to play some actual Crash Bandicoot with your wife. It’s an incredibly touching, poignant theme that also wrestles with the conflict between Nate’s passion for treasure hunting and his continuing relationship with Elena.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – The Train

While Uncharted 2 could pretty much fill up this entire list, the train levels pretty much sum up the Uncharted experience. This string of chapters boasts some of the most breathtaking level design and graphical ingenuity, traveling from the Nepalese jungle lowlands to the high Himalaya. Somehow a quick escape on a cargo train turns into a life-or-death battle against heavily armed thugs. When the train carries you higher into the mountains, it’s up to you to single-handedly take out a helicopter. This is hands down one of the most mind-blowing video game levels from the past ten years.

Naughty Dog is an expert at blending intense action with moments of real emotional impact. The Uncharted series are easy classics because of their consistently superb design, writing, and acting. An entire book could be written on the series’ virtues, but we think these five brief scenes do a good job pinpointing the highlights.
