Margot Robbie To Produce & Star in Harley Spinoff Movie (And Why We’re Stoked)

Margot Robbie To Produce & Star in Harley Spinoff Movie (And Why We’re Stoked)

Between her killer performance in Suicide Squad as Harley Quinn and her film accomplishments from behind the camera, it’s pretty clear why DC would want to hold on to the talented Margot Robbie. It’s therefore no surprise that Robbie signed a first-look deal with Warner Bros. through her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment. Under the deal, LuckyChap Entertainment will develop and produce several DC movies, including a Harley Quinn-focused spinoff movie, obviously to star Robbie, but now also to have her listed as an executive producer.

As The Hollywood Reporter remarked: “The first-look deal underlines Warner Bros.’ renewed focus on female-driven storytelling and comes after some notables moves from the Burbank-based studio.”

With more women taking front-and-center in the DC universe, it makes us more excited for the possibilities of the Harley spinoff potentially bringing forward more of DC’s (anti-)heroines. Given the rumors suggesting that there may be a significant role for Harley’s girlfriends (particularly the Birds of Prey), it would be a great way for the DC cinematic universe to bring in more interesting, powerful, and self-sufficient women.

In Batman: The Animated Series, where Harley Quinn first appeared, she and Poison Ivy not only developed a close friendship Thelma and Louise-style as literal partners in crime, but also lived together as roommates.

Similarly, the exploration of her relationship with Black Canary is also extremely interesting, as explored in Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Two. In the middle of a fight, Canary stops to throw up because of her morning sickness. Harley puts it together, figuring out Canary is pregnant, and reveals that she herself was once pregnant. She also tearfully expresses some painful and tragic truths about her own pregnancy (and Joker’s reaction to it) and reveals it’s better for her daughter to have a normal life rather than share in hers. The comedy and tragedy of her relationship with Canary  (as well as everyone else) is perfectly fitting for Harley.

Suffice to say, seeing the relationships that Harley cultivates with women–particularly as healthy and supportive, which is in stark contrast to that of her relationship with Joker–is really exciting for so many reasons.

What do you think of a Harley Quinn-centric movie? Who would you cast in the other roles? Let us know in the comments!
