Adam Driver, who plays Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens, is not just a brilliant actor; he’s also a veteran of the Marine Corps. But Driver isn’t sitting on his laurels, he’s giving back to men and women currently in uniform. In this video from Vice Media, Driver performs in Kuwait with other Hollywood luminaries such as Danielle Brooks from Orange Is the New Black.
Driver caught the creative bug at Mishawaka High School in Indiana, where he performed in the school’s theater and choir programs. He graduated in 2001, but the September 11th attacks put his life on a different course and he enlisted in the United States Marines. Unfortunately, he injured his sternum in a biking accident and despite continuing to demonstrate his fitness through training, he was unable to deploy to any theater of combat (no pun intended), resulting in a medical discharge. Driver then went on to pursue an acting career, studying at the Juilliard School before moving to Broadway, off-Broadway, television, and film work.
Still, Driver is clearly committed to the troops, as he demonstrates in the clip below. Through Arts In The Armed Forces, an organization Driver founded in 2008, he and fellow performing artists work on giving back by bringing theater to the United States armed forces.
