Joss Whedon’s New Avengers

Joss Whedon’s New Avengers

Joss Whedon is know for his ensemble casts, filled with a diverse assemblage of characters spurring witty dialogue back and forth at one another and working together to fight against a greater evil. The Avengers is no exception. With the US release of Avengers: Age of Ultron this weekend, I think it’s important to take a look back on some of Whedon’s past characters. In fact, I’ve taken it upon myself to assemble a new group of Avengers composed entirely of some of Joss’s original IP’s.

Disclaimer: This post contains mild spoilers for Joss’s earlier works.

1. Mal Reynolds

Mal-Reynolds

The first character who would make an obvious Avenger, in my opinion, is Mal Reynolds from Firefly. Mal would be similar to a Tony Stark/Iron Man type character. Tumultuous, snarky, maybe not the easiest guy to get along with, but ultimately a dedicated leader who would inspire the group to fight against the Big Bad.

2. Buffy Summers

Next on the docket is another great Joss character that is used to saving the world on a daily basis, Buffy Summers. Buffy has stacked up quite the repertoire through her years of fighting vampires and demons. Miss Summers would fill the Captain America or Thor role in the group with ease. She’s the girl next door who just so happens to be the chosen one and a total badass.

3. Topher Brink

The next character I would chose is Topher Brink. In Dollhouse, Topher is the genius programer responsible for imprinting dolls. Though a bit of a weakling and highly immoral, Topher would serve as the lovable goofball, comic relief member of the group. However, though I hate to say it, he is the most expendable character and could very well serve as the sacrifice.

4. Whiskey/Dr. Claire Saunders

Of course, if we’re going to have Topher, we’d need to have Whiskey, preferably imprinted as Dr. Claire Saunders to keep Topher in check. In the same way that Whiskey serves as the ultimate guardian of the L.A. Dollhouse, she would serve as a guard to the home base. Additionally, she has medical skills, which is always a plus.

5. Victor

And of course, we would need an imprint-able active, because with out a doll there wouldn’t be much use for Topher’s character. I’m partial to Victor because of Enver Gjokaj’s incredible range. The combination of these three characters would fill the Bruce Banner/Hulk type role, a genius scientist constantly battling with himself and his emotions.

6. Willow Rosenberg

Willow-Rosenberg-Buffy-Vampire-Slayer

Furthermore, I’d have to cast Joss’s original scarlet witch, Willow Rosenberg. In the later seasons of Buffy, Willow is skilled in witchcraft and able to cast extremely powerful spells. Though at times this power threatens to take her over the edge, she would provide a great strength to the group.

7. River Tam

And last, but certainly not least, I would have to pick River Tam. River would make the ultimate Avenger. Not only is she advanced intellectually, but the tests the Alliance performed on her against her will turned her into an assassin with psychic abilities. Though at times River can be unstable, Mal’s compassion and leadership would keep her in check. Not to mention, she can kill you with her brain.
