Did someone say snog box?
Captain Jack Harkness could be making his way back into the TARDIS for this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special. Actor John Barrowman is keeping confirmation of this rumor strictly to himself after teasingly posting a video to his Facebook page regarding his whereabouts during the first week of production for new episodes of Who.
Barrowman assures fans that he will return to Cardiff “in about a week and a half,” which just happens to line up with the series’ shooting schedule for the Christmas special.
Are you thinking what we’re thinking?
Showrunner Stephen Moffat has been quoted in the past expressing that he wouldn’t want to bring back characters like River Song and Jack Harkness to the show unless it was for a very special reason, and fans were delighted to see a revival of River’s story last Christmas, making Captain Jack’s possible return that much more riveting.
Alongside the teaser video posted by Barrowman regarding the show, Titan Comics announced a new Torchwood series last month, to be written by none other than John and his sister, Carol E. Barrowman. Could news of a new Torchwood storyline be enough to spark a visit from Jack on television, too?
Captain Jack’s last Doctor Who appearance was back in 2010 for his stint in The End of Time, though his spinoff series, Torchwood, ran until September of 2011. We’ve gone long enough without the suave smile and slicker-than-oil humor of Captain Jack, so here’s hoping we see more undeniably awesome moments like these if (when!) he returns to Doctor Who.
Jack’s First Appearance
We first meet Jack in 1941 during the London Blitz, when he discovers poor Rose Tyler dangling from a barrage balloon. Sure, he saves her, but only after getting an eyeful of both her and a fellow Royal Air Force officer.
Jack Questions the Sonic Screwdriver
Jack compares the strength of his sonic blaster to the Doctor’s questionable sonic device with, “Who looks at a screwdriver and thinks, ooh, this could be a little more sonic?”
Jack Gets a Makeover
One of the most memorable, character-driven scenes featuring Captain Jack takes place in a futuristic and sadistic reality show based on modern day makeover specials.
When Jack rides the TARDIS to the end of the universe
Don’t worry, you read that correctly. The immortal Jack Harkness latches on to the outside of the Doctor’s TARDIS and rides through a vortex to the end of the universe. Nobody is that cool. Nobody.
The Face of Boe
Fans were left speechless when Jack uttered the words, “The Face of Boe, they called me,” in the final episode of season three, alongside Martha Jones and the Doctor. This incredible tie-in to a once-believed-separate storyline in the series gave new meaning to previous episodes and adventures.
