Humble Freedom Bundle: How Gamers Raised Over $4M For Liberty And Compassion

If you haven’t heard, Humble Bundle has been offering an incredible bundle worth over $600 for only $30, with the proceeds going to three charities: The American Civil Liberties Union, Doctors Without Borders, and International Rescue Committee. As Humble Bundle themselves revealed in a blog: “We chose these three organizations because of the inspiring work they do in providing humanitarian assistance to refugees and displaced people, and in defense of justice, human rights, and civil rights.” All proceeds of the bundle will be going to the above 3 charities (with gamers choosing how the funds are distributed.)

Though we’ve always known gamers can make meaningful changes through their passions, there’s gotta be some sort of achievement for how much support this bundle has recieved. In less than 5 hours, the funding drive raised its goal of $300K (which was matched by Humble Bundle) and as of this writing just a few short days after the drive went live, it’s currently sitting at $4.6M with over 140,000 supports and growing. That’s pretty incredible.

Let’s talk about the goods. There are 56 games currently available, including numerous beloved and highly-praised games like Stardew Valley, Monster Loves You and Super Meat Boy. There are also a great number of fantastic books, including  A Little Gold Book of Ghastly Stuff, an out-of-print Neil Gaiman book of short fiction and personal essays, an audiobook version of Information Doesn’t Want To be Free (described as, “a vivid guide to the ways creativity and the Internet interact today”) contributed to by Cory Doctorow and Neil Gaiman, and read by Wil Wheaton.

Additionally, the bundle also includes A Double Fine Adventure, a documentary sharing the story of videogame luminary (and recent Tabletop guest Tim Schafer) and how he, “made history with the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter, a crowdfunding campaign that changed the way games are created and funded forever.”

Suffice to say, not only are gamers making the world a better place by supporting this bundle, they’re also benefitting from all the great titles included. If you haven’t backed yet, there’s only a few more days left to pick up the bundle for yourself.

Which title in the bundle would you recommend to a friend? Tell us which one and why in the comments!
