Welcome to your first step in winning your next board game night. Our very own Ivan Van Norman is here to help you set up that beautiful board game that you just bought at the store or that’s been sitting on your shelf for ages. After all the pieces have been separated, the maps have pulled out of the box, and the instructions dutifully thrown away; let Ivan get you started in this How to Play series. Every great game starts with an amazing first turn. Let us help you get there.
On this episode of How to Play, Ivan will be taking you through Potion Explosion. In this game, you’ll be trying to complete as many potions as you can as you work your way through your alchemist apprenticeship.
Separate your potions by type, which you can determine using the stopper color and symbol at the top. After you discard two potion tiles of your choice, take the starter potions from each pile (denoted with the small, white star on the left side), shuffle them, and then deal out twice as many as there are players.
Players will then participate in a snake draft to choose which potions they want to start with, which they will then place in their Bunsen burners. Once finished with the draft, shuffle all the remaining potions and divide them into five even(ish) stacks. Place your Help and Skill tokens (4 for two players, 5 for three players, and 6 for four players) to the side, and you’re done with set up! Find out to do next in the video above.
