Let’s imagine a special pack of cards created by a graphic artist and comic book fan, to be given away as goodies at his daughter’s 8th birthday for the children to play Crazy 8s. The cards are real, and they are magnificent. Appropriately thematic for the game, the cards are adorned with original Hello Kitty/DC mashup art featuring Gotham’s zaniest and craziest, including Batman himself, who is featured on the deck’s aces.
Villains include highly recognizable characters such as Harley Quinn (queen), Joker (ironically the King), and Two-Face (2s – what else?) alongside more obscure villains such as Ambush Bug (8s) and Mad Hatter (10s).
All the characters feature the characteristic Hello Kitty bow, as well as the button nose, iconic whiskers, and missing mouth. Despite the adherence to the Hello Kitty style (or perhaps, because of it), every character is brilliantly designed, drawing inspiration from the more kitschy silver and bronze comic ages. In the world of Hello Kitty, there is no such thing as a dark and gritty reboot.
The notable missing Gotham character: Catwoman. Maybe it was too obvious, or maybe she wasn’t crazy enough to make the cut.
