Need a idea for an upcoming cosplay? Check out Hannah Alexander’s work. She recreates popular characters in gorgeous Art Noveau style with a fashionista’s eye; breathing new, highly stylized life into Pokemon, Disney, Adventure Time, Final Fantasy, Bioshock, and Avatar.
Hannah has been connected to art since she was a child. She said, “I was six years old when my aunt bought be an easel and took me painting in the countryside, but I truly found a love of art after I was bought the Final Fantasy VIII guidebook though. I was awe struck by the incredible concept art. The rest is history!”
She is mostly self-taught, but as a teen she attended a course in Fashion Design and Production and it shows in her gorgeous costume designs. Hannah said, Art Noveau as a style spoke to her because “I love how the subject matters portrays both femininity and strength. I also love the heavy line work, whimsical floral themes and the flat, poster-style colouring.”
Her illustrations are so beautiful that they have inspired a cosplay community all their own. The Hannah Alexander Cosplayers have created a place where cosplayers all around the world can come together to share their images, construction techniques, favorite places to shop for materials, and generally support each other. Considering how detailed and elaborate Hannah’s characters can be, it is amazing what these cosplayers have managed to create.
Hannah appreciates the attention the cosplay community has given her work. “I never thought so many people would be interested – I didn’t even start off creating for the purposes of cosplay, but now I definitely keep that in mind while designing. It’s such an incredible feeling seeing my work come to life. All the cosplayers inspire me so much and their costumes are just breath-taking!”
So what is next for Hannah? “I’m definitely going to complete more Pokemon costume designs and also Alice (in Wonderland), Lilo (and Stitch) and Wendy (Peter Pan). I’m also working on a few poster pieces such as Amaterasu (Okami) and Sailor Mars (Sailor Moon).” You can see more of Hannah’s work and the costumes inspired by it in our gallery below or check out her other work on Facebook, Etsy, Instagram, and Youtube.
