Planning on dressing up in a Critical Role costume this Halloween? The cast wants to see it! Matthew Mercer and company are currently running a Halloween costume contest. You have until the end of the month to tweet a photo or share one on Instagram with the hashtag #CriticalCostumes to show off your love of all things Critical Role. A winner and a runner-up, chosen by the cast, will receive special prizes.
Whether or not you’re planning to enter the contest, if you’re looking for a quick, fun, Critical Role inspired costume for this Halloween, we’ve got you covered. These simple costume ideas may not feature members of Vox Machina proper, but they are just as memorable and recognizable to anyone who’s a Critical Role fan. Even better, they’re just close enough to other costumes that you won’t find yourself having to explain it to any non-Critters.
Dungeon Master Liam O’Brien
If you watched “Liam’s Quest,” you know that DM Liam is a scary, scary man… that’s perfectly suited for a Halloween costume. In “The Return of Liam!,” his second go-round as Dungeon Master, he was a little less terrifying, but sporting a similar look. You can do the same with just a few items you probably have hanging in the closet.
Trying to avoid the dreaded “What exactly are you dressed as?” question? Carry the Dungeon Master’s Guide with you to make everyone not in the know think you’re going as a typical Dungeon Master for Halloween–even though we know there was nothing typical about “Liam’s Quest.”
What You Need:
- Black cap (extra points if you can find the Horde design from “Liam’s Quest”)
- Black henley shirt
- Black rim glasses
Victor the Black Powder Merchant
From the moment Victor the black powder merchant made his debut in Episode 23, “The Rematch,” he was unforgettable. Described as elderly, lithe, and lanky, with spectacles of two different-sized lenses, Victor immediately captured the attention of both Vox Machina and Critters alike.
The amazing “Critical Role Animated” short by Gee Whiz perfectly depicts Victor’s essence and energy if you’re in need of more inspiration.
Non-Critters will likely think you’re a mad scientist, but your fellow Critical Role fans will recognize you immediately.
What You Need:
- Frazzled hair (a gray or white wig, preferably)
- Goggles or broken glasses on your head
- Black eyeshadow/makeup all over your face and clothes
- Bonus: Tape down a few fingers to make them look like they’re missing
“I love the Sun Tree!” – Sam Riegel, “Trust”
While the original incarnation of Whitestone’s Sun Tree is prime Halloween material, ropes swinging from dead branches and all, it’s the re-invigorated tree that’s really won over the hearts of Critters everywhere. Its “Matthew McConaugh-a-tree,” laid-back vibe lends itself perfectly to a hippie-themed costume that you can tell your non-Critter friends is a “tree hugger.”
So find some leaves and some Birkenstocks, and don’t forget the most important part of the costume: chilllllll.
What You Need:
- Brown or tie-dyed shirt
- Brown pants
- Leaf garland, found at craft stores, wrapped around arms and/or head
- Birkenstocks (Bark-enstocks)
