Greetings from Sword & Laser!

Hello to everyone out there in Geek & Sundry land! This is Veronica, one of the hosts of Sword & Laser, a new video show about all things sci-fi and fantasy debuting right here on G&S. I tried “tandem writing” this post with my co-host, Tom Merritt, but it’s got awfully complicated. Anyhow! Some of you may know that Sword & Laser has actually been an audio podcast for the past four years, and we couldn’t be happier to bring our show to YouTube for the very first time. But I wanted to start with a little background for you! Sword & Laser began as a book club back in October of 2007 with our very first pick, The Golden Compass. Since then, we’ve covered the gamut from classic science fiction and fantasy, cyberpunk, hard sci-fi, post-modern fantasy (yes, that’s a thing!) and zombies. I’m putting zombies into their own category, because why not? And since podcasts were the hip new thing back then, we started the audio show Febuary 4th, 2008, with our discussion of William Gibson’s Neuromancer. The next big change happened in March of 2010, when we moved our discussion forums over to Goodreads. It was love at first site (get it?): an entire community of book fanatics, authors, and critics all living in harmony on one website. Since then, our discussion forums have blossomed to almost 6,000 members, who constantly amaze and surprise us with their insights about the books we’re reading. We even occassionally get the authors themselves chiming in on threads about their own books! The video show here on Geek and Sundry will give us a chance to share even more with our viewers! Finally we’ll get to see your happy faces (or angry, depending on how much you love or hate the book) during our feedback section, and we can also show off the beautiful book art that we don’t often get to enjoy while reading Kindle editions! Plus, as Felicia has pointed out many times… we have a dragon. And S/he is awesome (we can’t figure out if it’s a boy or a girl yet… awkward). We hope you’ll join us in this new journey, and let us know what and who you want to see on the show! As always, we want your audience feedback and input. Check us out every other Friday! — Veronica Belmont http://about.me/veronica
