Grandma, What Hip Threads You Have: A Fairy Tale Fashion Exhibition in NYC

Fairytales can come true… if you’re dream is to gaze at a fairytale-inspired fashion collection. For those who do, the Fashion Institute of Technology is displaying several dozen fantastical fashion pieces designed by some of the world’s most recognizable designers in its current show “Fairy Tale Fashion.”

Fairytales speak to not only our collective unconscious but also tap into a desire to have impact. Because, as F.I.T. writes, “In versions of numerous fairy tales it is evident that dress is often used to symbolize a character’s transformation, vanity, power, or privilege.” Cinderella’s glass slipper. The ruby slippers. The little red riding hood. These items propel the character into adventure or even further the story.

Keeping in mind classic tales like “Beauty and the Beast” and “Snow White,” more modern fare like The Wizard of Oz, and more obscure tales like “Furrypelts,” designers such as Dolce and Gabbana, Tom Ford, Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, Prada, and Rodarte have contributed their work to illustrate this collection.

In addition, there are several items ripped not from the pages of fairy tales but from the history books. 18th century garments, as well as early 20th century clothes, also make an appearance here.
New Yorkers and those who live in striking distance can see it for themselves until April 16, 2016. Out-of-towners can check out the gallery we have here, but the photos are only a substitute, and the clothes have some exquisite details best seen up close.

If you want a more in-depth look, Yale University Press has published a book about the curated collection, with 127 color photos. It’s $50—cheaper than the price of a plane ticket.
