Rian Johnson looks like he’s having fun directing Star Wars Episode VIII. Granted, making movies of this grandeur is never easy, so it’s nice of Lucasfilm to pull back the curtain that J.J. Abrams’s Mystery Box employed on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Johnson, who directed films like the modern-noir Brick and sci-fi tongue-twister Looper, has always shared his 35mm photography over on his Tumblr and has posted a few behind-the-scenes images from Star Wars Episode VIII (see gallery below). None are particularly divulging when it comes to speculating on the next adventure of Rey, Finn, Poe, and the rest of the gang (unless you didn’t think Maz was coming back, but come on!), but that’s not the point. In the spoiler-filled culture we find ourselves living in right now, it’s nice to see a more relaxed approach to sharing behind-the-scenes images and video that still gets fans excited, but doesn’t feel like some part of a big marketing machine. On Twitter, Johnson is also equally cheeky regarding his work on the new Star Wars film:
Johnson seems to have set the tone for the production as actors Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are also sharing silly or cute things on their social media. It’s just really nice to see these talented folks having fun, but the the side effect is that it makes fans like me okay about waiting for the goods. Who needs terrible quality drone photos of a half-finished set when we’ve got this gold:
Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII comes out December 15th, 2017. We’re in good hands. Make sure to check out the gallery of Johnson’s photos below!
