Come see what wonderful, crazy stuff is out there and connect with a community of fans who knows what it’s like to like the wonderful, crazy, and unknown. Signal Boost! airs every week on both YouTube and Alpha. This week we take a listen to My Giant Nerd Boyfriend – Boosted By Havana Mahoney.

“I’m actually not very short by Asian standards,” protagonist Fishball states in the opening of webtoon My Giant Nerd Boyfriend, “It’s just him being crazy tall.”

Fishball is the nom de plume of a Malaysian artist and writer who originally conceived  My Giant Nerd Boyfriend as a bilingual comic book based on life with her boyfriend. Now found on the interwebs, the personal slice-of-life webtoon chronicles the couple’s relationship, with observations of both the mundane and the funny.

In an interview with Malay Mail Online, Fishball cited The Adventures of Tintin, Asterios Polyp, and Calvin and Hobbes as influences on her work. “Both the boy and the toy tiger [in Calvin and Hobbes] are so alive because of their imagination. There are layers of meaning: there is always some deeper message underneath the surface.”

Those layers of meaning can be found in Fishball’s comic musings: whether it’s the minor inconveniences of a height difference of over a foot or the introduction of one character’s hobby (board games!) to the other, My Giant Nerd Boyfriend shines as it documents the idiosyncrasies of one couple’s relationship.
