Long before the internet gave us quizzes like “How Would You Die in the Hunger Games?” and “What Netflix Genre Should You Try?”, Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers constructed the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
The MBTI focuses on the following four segments of the human personality: sensation, intuition, feeling, and thinking. For many, these topics work as a window into why an individual thinks and acts the way they do and are great for categorizing, let’s say, characters in an extremely popular TV series.
In 2011, HBO adapted G.R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. Or, as it turned out, our ruin. We’ve witnessed favorite character after favorite character burned, stabbed, and squished to death, wondering all along what keeps the surviving characters afloat. What makes them tick? Luckily, the MBTI could give us a peek inside the mind of Martin, and deliver clues as to who we’ll lose next, on screen or in the pages of his forthcoming continuation of the series, the reportedly titled Winds of Winter.
Introvert, Sensing, Thinking, Perceiving
Great in a crisis, adaptable to change, energetic, risky, and stubborn, Arya embodies what it means to be an ISTP.
Brienne of Tarth
Introvert, Sensing, Thinking, Judging
ISTJ traits to be found in Brienne include her respect for duty, directness, practicality, judgmental nature, and how quick she is to take the blame.
Introvert, Sensing, Feeling, Perceiving
A true ISFP, Davos is curious, passionate, sensitive, anxious, and often succumbs to a low self esteem.
Introvert, Sensing, Feeling, Judging
Observant, patient, and loyal, shy Jorah and tends to repress his feelings, a strong trait of an ISFJ.
Introvert, Intuition, Feeling, Judging
An INFJ to the core, our Khaleesi is enthusiastic, hard-working, imaginative, a little too altruistic, and tends to overload herself with project upon project.
Introvert, Intuition, Thinking, Perceiving
Sly Varys is truly one of a kind, analytical, straightforward, private, and altogether condescending. Very much so an INTP.
Introvert, Intuition, Thinking, Judging
Confident, decisive, and determined, Littlefinger is as arrogant as he is clueless with romance, all traits of an INTJ.
Introvert, Intuition, Feeling, Perceiving
Sweet and idealistic Sam is absolutely an INFP. He is creative, passionate, impractical, and he tends to take situations a tad too personally.
Extrovert, Intuition, Feeling, Judging
This red woman is as charismatic as they get, and she uses her wiles to prove her leadership and reliability, but can be overly idealistic and too sensitive, ust as every ENFJ can be.
Extrovert, Intuition, Feeling, Perceiving
The people’s queen, Margaery cleverly controls her popularity by being observant and a natural communicator. Her ENFP qualities also include her overthinking of important issues, as we see in several moments throughout her role in the series.
Extrovert, Intuition, Thinking, Judging
Oh, Cersei, as strong-willed, strategic, and ruthless as any ENTJ to ever exist. Efficient, yes, but intolerance can only get you so far. The question is, how far will she go?
Extrovert, Intuition, Thinking, Perceiving
Quick thinking, charismatic, and full of wit, there’s far more to Tyrion than what his family expects of him. His charisma and energy embodies the ENTP, as well as his argumentative qualities and insensitivity to others opinions.
Extrovert, Sensing, Feeling, Judging
Sansa Stark has risen from the ashes time and time again, saved by her loyalty, warmth, and newfound bravery, but her pattern of worry regarding her social status has also been her downfall in many situations, not unlike other ESFJ’s of Westeros.
Extrovert, Sensing, Feeling, Perceiving
Though he may have lost himself, we know Theon to be such an ESFP. Bold, observant, and keenly concentrated on showmanship, though he has always lacked focus in other areas of his life.
Extrovert, Sensing, Thinking, Judging
Jovial Olenna Tyrell is as ESTJ as one would get. Direct, organized, and strong-willed, yet inflexible, and extra judgmental towards others.
Extrovert, Sensing, Thinking, Perceiving
Fans can all agree that Jaime is difficult to decipher, as we both love and hate him throughout the series. These feelings towards an ESTP are not rare, as though they are perceptive and sociable, ESTP’s boldness and defiance lead them into all sorts of risky situations.
