The Official TableTop S3 Crowdfunding Thread!

Yay! - our first achievement is already unlocked - onwards and upwards! :)

There may be folks reading this thread that haven't contributed as of yet, or are deciding whether you want to contribute.  As such, you won't be seeing the e-mail FAQ's that are going out.  As such, here's a copy-and-paste for the sake of visibility...

I FORGOT TO ADD INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING! What do I do? Will I get my things/stuff?

Yes, don't worry. We’ve added a new perk! Just choose the new $10 donation labeled "International Shipping" under the same name used to donate.

Will the DVDs be Region free?

Yes they absolutely will be region free. TableTop for all! They will however be NTSC, and not PAL.

Will the DVDs have CC (closed captioning) on them?

Yes, both Season 1 and Season 2 will be Closed Captioned.

I donated an initial amount, but want a larger perk, can I donate from different accounts to get a larger perk?

We would greatly appreciate it if each IGG account was limited to one pledge amount, if you are interested in several smaller perks as part of your donation (aka two donations of $75 for two T-shirts, etc) please let us know.

I want a new perk that just came out, can I bump up my current contribution to get one?

Sadly we do not have the ability to change your previous contribution to a new perk. Especially if the perk is a limited one. If you are interested in a new limited perk, we suggest you contribute again.

I really want the 1,000 'get all the games' perk, can you open that up?

We appreciate your feedback and are so glad you love the "get all the games" perk! We are trying to make a few more of these available in the coming weeks, so keep a close eye out!

@EricBarkman Good catch. I'd have expected that it's included by "The above", but it's the last one before the special perks. My guess would still be that they simply forgot to change "The $150 perks" to $175. Though an official statement would be nice. Maybe if we conjure @ohcatrina ?

edit: just pointing out that my guess was incorrect (to avoid any potential confusion).

    @Oakspoor So, basically you're saying I'm screwed?

It also just occurred to me, that they might not be able to change the description of existing perks. Might prevent a campaign from changing "you receive a motor bike" to "you receive a picture of a motor bike" on the last day.

Wait, they already changed the 10k description, so it should be possible (or maybe restricted to perks nobody picked yet?) Need to go and find out...

    edit: good guess...

What You CAN'T Edit After Your Campaign Is Live

    • Your funding goal
    • Your campaign's funding type
    • Any perks that have been claimed by a contributor
    • Your campaign's currency
So I guess if the plan is to include the 175 perk with all high level contributions, they could only update some of them (which would be really confusing) or add it to the campaign text (where most people might not be looking for it).

I was referring to conjuring @Ohcatrina. And your excellent intelligence bonus.

Also Felicia and Wil had a lot of great comments about people who had questions on WHY we

    were doing the campaign.

    Why are you going Independent?

Felicia: Geek and Sundry (and Tabletop) up until now was funded by YouTube's original channel initiative, which is not continuing to go forward anymore. We have been talking to a bunch of partners and are excited about some of our options to continue G&S as a company, but Wil (and we) were passionate about being able to keep Tabletop on schedule to release more episodes this year, and stay independent of influence to change the show for sponsor/commercial reasons. That is why we are fundraising like this.

Wil: We want to make the same TableTop that we've made for two seasons, and give our audience something that we're proud of, and we wanted to do that without compromising our vision for the show. The quickest and most reliable way to make that happen was to go directly to the people who love TableTop as much as we do, and ask them to help us make our third season as awesome as our first two.

Why are you asking for so much money?

Felicia: This show is a standout for a reason: We pay professional people to make it. It's polished and
stands next to TV show quality because we wanted to make something long-lasting, and impact in a big way, like a TV show when we conceived it. To put it in perspective: The average 30 second commercial you see on TV? Costs 1-3 million dollars. EACH. The average 1/2 hour comedy? 2-3 million dollars. Shows like Game of Thrones? 7-9 million dollars. PER EPISODE.

We are doing a minimum of fifteen, 30 minute shows for a fraction of ONE TV SHOW. If you put it in that perspective, we are definitely not paying people professional rates to work on it. I do a lot of low budget web videos (to help do shows like TableTop, actually), and I think the ones that last beyond that moment of consumption are the ones that have budgets, that people tend to enjoy over and over. My goal always has been to show the established TV world that people can work outside the system and compete with their business, Tabletop is our best example of that, just like The Guild before us. We are doing this show for the minimum we can do it and keep up what we have established before us.

Wil: This is a question that I wasn't expecting, and I feel really stupid for not explaining this more in advance. I've lived in the film and television industry my whole life, and I've been an active producer on TableTop for 40 episodes, so I know how much it costs to make an average show, and how much it costs to make our show. Let me be clear right away: we're not getting rich off TableTop. That said, to anyone who does not  live in the film and television world, I completely understand a sense of 'sticker shock' upon hearing that this YouTube show needs half a million dollars to produce fifteen episodes. This week, I'm doing an episode of The Big Bang Theory, When it's all finished and cut together, it'll be about 22 minutes (approximately the same length as the average episode of TableTop), and it'll cost several million dollars to produce. If you do a strict math problem, you'll see that we do fifteen (or 20 if/when we get there) episodes of TableTop - 33 minutes, at least, that's 660 minutes of TableTop - for less than the cost of a single 22 minute episode of network television.

We put everything we have into TableTop, because we love it, and we push our budget to its maximum limited so the show that we put out on YouTube can stand next to anything you see on Broadcast or Cable, and I'll keep doing that as long as we can. I also want to make one thing really clear: we're incredibly grateful - I am personally - incredibly grateful and honored by the contributions we've been given by the TableTop community. I know that you're trusting us to keep doing what we've been doing, and I'm going to honor that trust by making the very best show we can possibly make.

Will TableTop still be free to watch? Do I have to donate to see it?

Wil: Absolutely. And now that we are completely independent, we aren’t limited to broadcasting on YouTube, so we’ll be able to make Tabletop available to even more people in even more ways, as we release season three.

Felicia: You do not have to donate, we appreciate it so much if you choose to do so, and understand if you don't. It will still be free and watchable by you if we make our fundraising goal.

Everything about this is amazing. I've been pretty vocal about how great this fundraiser is, but I figured I would drop into the forums and flail over it a bit as well.

Thus far I've donated towards the W/F signed poster, and the Felicia shoutout.... and then 20$ more because I of course forgot about the whole shipping thing. Ooops.

I'm really aiming for the watch party perk, also would love to make that kind of contribution, but I just don't know if the timing will work for me and my jobs. It's already tough to plan days off for conventions that I have months of heads up for....
    we shall see!

This might be an obvious question, but when it says "150 perk plus *insert higher perk here*, does it include the new perk, the ID card, the DVD's, the shirt and so on? Or just the one perk above? If that even makes sense.

I honestly don't mind either way. I'm just happy to be helping everyone else make tabletop (and the RPG show) happen :) Just curious.

Okay that was long winded. BYE!

Thanks for the interview Q&A, I think that answered a lot of questions. I did have one follow up. They mentioned that sponsorship was not the way they wanted to go, and I assume that is because the likely sponsors would be game companies, at which point you're credibility about the 'fun-ness' of a game is put at risk. Has there been any exploration or consideration to sponsorship by completely unrelated companies however? Something like Ford Trucks or some such place that has no relation directly to gaming?

For those people who are finding their way here through the link provided over on YouTube - once you've read through the FAQ, make sure to bounce back to page 1 of this thread, as there are some additional questions answered via those discussions as well :)

And just to provide some additional context - a lot of the responses within this thread are from community volunteers.  Our official G&S representative is @OhCatrina, who's the fantastic Geek and Sundry community manager.  She'll continue to be the one who's kindly chasing down the official answers to fan-questions!

In the meantime, though, I did want to thank everyone for their fantastic enthusiasm and for working together to help spread the word, and to provide responses to some of these common queries.  That's always one of the coolest things about Geek and Sundry - the way that the G&S team, and the fan-community work together, side-by-side :)

    - Agreed! I love that there isn't as much of a barrier (so to say) from the fans as with other communities/fandoms/etc. It feels like we are all working together.

@littlemissKris_ The way we've had to structure it via IGG's system has made it so that those particular perks include everything in the $150 perk -- so the $175 is something of a standalone, unfortunately!

@jamisonswift Right now, there aren't any talks that involve looking for other sponsors for TableTop! I think that'd be something worth looking into, but as TableTop is our fan favorite show, we're always very careful and attentive when it comes to the production and who has their hands in it. We want every ounce of it to be reflect the passion and dedication our fans have for it. <3 Good question!!

Thanks @littlemissKris_ - as you noted above, one of the really gratifying things about this campaign is seeing people like yourself and other community members go above and beyond in their level of support!  Contributing some funds is already very cool - but it's doubly charming to see so many people spending time by actively spreading word, drumming up enthusiasm, helping answer questions, and being positive advocates.  Those efforts provide a great feeling of connection, team-spirit, and grass-roots enthusiasm.  So many thanks to everyone who's carrying the torch :)

And as always, huge thanks to @OhCatrina for being such an embedded, friendly, and helpful representative of the Geek and Sundry team!

Hm as for sponsors that could work.. maybe smaller toy stores that sell board games?

Considering how much tabletop episodes boost sales, simply knowing what games to stock up on could be worth the investment for such stores, and the smaller ones wouldnt be too demanding. Big store chains could try to meddle.

Smaller stores specialised on board games would likely be owned by people who love board games just as much as us too.

@ohcatrina - Thanks! I was unclear (my bad), I was inquiring about the 150 perk! When it says "above", all of the perks above it say above.... so is every single thing above the ID card (150) included, or just the one directly above (the DVD's). I only ask because I want a shirt and will donate for it if it's not included in the 150 perk! Otherwise I will keep the funds aside to see what else is coming! (I knew the 175 was a stand alone, and it's a super cool offering!) Thank you so much for all this work you are doing to help us. I wish I could send you a gift basket.

As always, happy just to help the massive community of donators fund this awesome and worthy of the support show :)))

@torontogal - thank YOU as well. You are always so much more informative than I can seem to be. It's super helpful!

@ohcatrina Thanks for the reply. Hopeful that some kind of sustainable funding model can be worked out, so that TT doesn't need to go through this pain of fundraising every year. Of course this is coming from an avid public radio listener who is subjected to fund drives every 3 months or so... hehe.

Actually, perhaps that might be a model that G&S could follow. Raise funds through the community, but also supplement it with "sponsors", like you have on public media. Have 'sponsors' who agree to match funds up to a certain amount (like 10K or some such), and offer them a shout-out in return. The 'sponsors' get some cheap advertising, the program stays free of outside control, and it helps distribute the load a bit more than just on community fundraising. Granted you guys aren't a 503c, but it's a thought.

I could see it now... "Programming on TableTop is supported by the law firm of Dorsey and Whitney, LLC"

    LOL

So based on new perks becoming available and no way to easily change a selected perk or upgrade contributions, my two predictions would be:

-contributions will be slowing down a lot for the next few weeks, as everybody aware of it will want to wait until after the last perk has been added

-lots of complaints after new perks become available by those who already donated, plus many contributors who would be willing to increase their pledge for a new perk, but not so much willing to make a full second contribution (may or may not be offset by those who do make a second one, because they really want one of the upcoming perks)

Not blaming G&S for this, as I'm pretty sure this kind of thing has been discussed and is simply an annoying limitation of how IGG works. Of course, "anything" could be done and managed outside of IGG, but with 8000 people already and probably at least 15000 by the end of the campaign, trying to manually sort it all out would be a ton of work (and tons of manual book keeping means tons of potential for making mistakes).

Maybe for the unlimited perks the easiest solution would be to just go with the highest perk that is within the total amount donated and ignore the selection? From the way I interpret the FAQ, G&S already prefers only one total amount per account and asks for a separate message if the amount is intended for multiple lower level perks. Maybe the FAQ could be extended with some more possible scenarios and how to handle them.

Edit: just realized that from a business point of view, that would be a pretty bad idea, as G&S might end up spending a good chunk of the money on physical perks that the person deliberately didn't go for. Not sure how common that is, but I know I have done this on some campaigns when the perks weren't interesting, but I still wanted to give more than $5.

@thegh0sts I think so too, but I'm a bit biased. ;) Please share the indiegogo link so we can get the word out! TableTop gets 80K-100K views per episode on the regular - so we have a highly untapped audience! A lot of our viewers are still coming down the Vine not having known about it, so the more support we have via sharing, the better!

Further to that, is it worth adding in links to the existing episodes of TableTop, to catch people who are going back to watch old episodes? I say this because I just went to the most recent episode, Lords of Vegas, and there's nothing on the whole page, or in the first minute of the video itself, that says there's a crowdfunding campaign going on. I'm sure we're/you're missing out on publicity there!

For example, how much work would it be for G&S to add an annotation linking to/plugging the Indiegogo campaign to the start and end of each existing episode of TableTop? Make it last for, say, the length of Wil's intro to the episode, or the first and last 30s of the video, or whatever. And then add a link in each video description as well.

As for something else similar the fans can do, how about we comment on every existing episode on Youtube with a link to the campaign? And get a bunch of people from the forum to like/reply to that comment in the hope that it shows up in the Top Comments bit as well as the newest comments.
