Here’s the new Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer everyone’s been waiting for since the crowd at Star Wars Celebration 2016 got an exclusive look last month. We’ve covered the first trailer and what to expect in these official Star Wars anthology films (separate from the Saga films like last year’s The Force Awakens) already, but for the uninitiated, Rogue One follows the young rascal Jyn Erso as she joins up with the Rebel Alliance to try and steal the plans to the first Death Star, setting the film just a short time before the events of A New Hope.
This trailer, like the first one, plays off the tension that is sure to mount as Erso and her crew venture deeper into Imperial territory, but also emphasizes the elegiac qualities of the struggle for survival and this rag-tag band of rebels’ chance to turn the tide during the Galactic Civil War. Rogue One will be released December 16th, but for now here are five reasons why I’m anticipating this new shade to the Star Wars universe coming to the big screen, and why you should too.
1. Jynuine Erso
Jyn Erso plays by only one set of rules, her own. Seemingly stern, but brassy, Erso (as played by Felicity Jones) has been running all her life. For some reason she’s decided to focus her antics and help the Rebel Alliance. Whatever the motivation, she’s the wild card the rebels need to make the most decisive move in their seemingly insurmountable struggle. I can’t wait to see what makes her tick and see her in action.
2. I’ve Got A Tone To Pick With You
Questions about how Rogue One will feel compared to the Saga films have plagued much of the conversations surrounding the behind the scenes peeks, but regardless of the rumors, Gareth Edwards’ ‘on the ground’ approach is very apparent from the dirty boot heels to the lack of lightsaber-wielding heroes in this adventure. How ugly will things get in order to save the galaxy? The dark side and the light side look to go shades of gray here.
3. Vader Unleashed
Fans are salivating at the thought of Darth Vader at his most iconc, going HAM on some rebellion ass. Like in the animated Star Wars: Rebels, Rogue One looks to avoid the conflicted father role Vader took that preoccupied the latter half of the original trilogy allowing his presence to strike fear into the hearts of all that oppose him. With James Earl Jones reprising his role as the voice of Vader, I’m certainly not going to pretend like I’m on any mercy missions this time.
4. A Stormtrooper In The Life
One of the most surprising things about The Force Awakens was its well-rounded portrayal of Stormtroopers, the Empire’s canon fodder. Besides Finn ditching the First Order and becoming a hero, we saw stormtroopers display different emotions and personalities even behind their masks. Rogue One looks to continue the trend with not only new kinds (like Shoretroopers and Deathtroopers), but we’ve also received a glimpse of one trooper asleep on the job and even an adorable stormtrooper doll discarded on the battlefield. Even if their aim still needs work, I’m happy to get a richer picture of these soldiers.
5. Beachside Bonanza
Finally the Star Wars universe is getting a new biome on the big screen. The tropical beaches of the Maldives will stand in for the planet Scarif in Rogue One and looks to be the site of a major set-piece in the film. While I doubt there will be any fun under the sun while war is being waged on its sandy beaches, I have a feeling the planet Scarif will become just as iconic as other Star Wars locales like Tatooine, Hoth, and Dagobah. Rogue One will certainly bring new meaning to the phrase ‘Muscle Beach Party’ at the very least. Get ready for a real splash!
