Five Essentials For Your ‘Firefly’ Themed Tabletop Day

Five Essentials For Your ‘Firefly’ Themed Tabletop Day

Are you a big, damn hero? Do you aim to misbehave? Are you a leaf on the wind?

With International Tabletop Day right around the corner, it’s time for us Browncoats to straighten up our transport ships and don our pretty, floral bonnets in preparation for a long day of play. Gather your crew, because it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Just be sure not to spill any of your Mudder’s Milk.

Firefly: The Game

First off, for an event with the purpose of playing tabletop games for hours on end, you’ll need at least one game that fits the theme of our favorite space cowboys. In Gale Force Nine’s Firefly: The Game, players captain their own transport ship and trail space for work, but as we all know, such a career invites all sorts of danger and plenty of adventure.

The game is designed for one to four players, and can last anywhere from an hour and a half to four hours, according to several reviews from fans. You begin with your ship, and travel to different planets to find jobs and pick up new crew members. Just watch out for Reavers, ship errors, and other problems as you work towards completing the story.

Costume Contest

Browncoats are particularly famous for their amazing cosplay outfits, and a Firefly party for Tabletop Day is perfect opportunity to show off. From Jayne’s earflap beanie to Kaylie’s mechanic jumpsuit, there are endless choices for every price range and level of craftiness.

Fruity Oaty Bars

For a fun, fueling snack during game play, a granola-based “fruity oaty bar” should do the trick. Subliminal messages optional.  With butter, sugar, flour, oats, and your favorite dried fruits, your guests are sure to make it through the day satisfied, and possibly singing this jingle on repeat. Watch out for that.

Firefly: Tall Card

Tall Card2

Featured in the show’s fourth episode, “Shindig”, we’re to understand that Tall Card is a game that the crew on Serenity plays to pass the time, and decide who is next on the schedule for chores. The folks at Toy Vault have created an actual, purchasable version of the game, featuring 45 cards, including the round cards seen in the episode, and 50 additional cards in case you get tired of their rules and want to create something new.

The extra cards and opportunity for creativity make this deck perfect for your group of Browncoats as you work your way through ITTD.

Mudder’s Milk

If you happen to have some Blue Sun Whiskey in your cabinet at home, why not throw together a glass or two of Mudder’s Milk for your thirsty tabletop playing friends? Mudding on Higgins’ Moon can be hard work, but in the video above we show you how to whip up a beverage to help you power through even the most arduous of tasks. Like 24-hour gaming, perhaps.
