Find the Wizarding School You Always Wanted in Ikenfell

Let’s face it. We’re all still a little salty we never got our acceptance letters to Hogwarts. Sadly there’s not much we can do about that, but the creative minds behind upcoming RPG Ikenfell might have the next best thing. It’s an old-school, Earthbound/Paper Mario inspired PC adventure set in a school for witches and wizards, the eponymous Ikenfell.

Ikenfell

You play as Maritte, a girl totally lacking magic ability. Her sister, Safina, a young witch-in-the-making, has disappeared, without a word from the school. Rather than sit at home wondering, Maritte ventures off to Ikenfell to get to the bottom of things on her own. After all, who has time for acceptance letters when your sister is missing?

Maritte will have to explore Ikenfell’s cavernous, enchanted halls. The school is replete with hidden rooms and eccentric characters. Along the way she’ll make friends (and a few enemies), and the Kickstarter page promises some smooching as well. In essence, it’s basically all we’ve ever wanted from a Harry Potter-themed RPG.

Ikenfell

Ikenfell is based on the turn-based JRPGs of yore, but the battle system will be a little more dynamic than that. You’ll have to time your spells to boost their power, and you’ll want to block incoming attacks or risk getting hit with a curse right in the face. The school is full of treasure ripe for the taking, and you’ll stumble upon lots of secret spells and equipment to help you in your search.

Chevy Ray sits at the helm of the project, having designed, written, and programmed the game. He’s also responsible for all of the art. Quite a jack-of-all-trades. Artist Hunter Russell is taking care of the battle animations (which are quite impressive–check out the trailer!). If that doesn’t have you sold, the game’s genre-bending soundtrack is by aivi & surasshu, the composers for Steven Universe. If you’re a fan, you’ll be pleased to know the soundtrack has snuck its way into some of the Kickstarter’s pledge tiers.

The game’s already doubled it’s funding goal of about $19,000, raising over $40,000. With two days left in the campaign, the team hopes to raise $50,000 to fund a full-length soundtrack with better quality tracks. Does Ikenfell have your muggle heart all aflutter?
