When you think of mad scientists, a number of great names comes to mind: Frankenstein, Dr. Strangelove, and Lex Luthor, just to name a few. We here at Geek & Sundry are proud to add one more name to that list as our own Felicia Day rises to the ranks of the power hungry as she dons the mad lab coat for the new Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes. Somewhere below The Satellite of Love, Felicia’s lab coat will rest beside that of Dr. Clayton Forrester and Pearl Forrester, the other mads of the series. And with your help, she will be taunting Joel with more bad movies in the future.
If you don’t know by now, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is returning by way of Kickstarter. The show reached its goal within the first week, but needs more in order to fulfill a full season of twelve episodes. With a loyal audience supporting the fundraiser and Felicia picking the movies, you know that it’s going to be an amazing series with some truly awful movies.
We recently caught up with Felicia Day here at Geek & Sundry to ask her some questions about MST3K and becoming the next mad.
What makes for a great bad movie?
The best bad movies need earnestness, terrible acting, and a bad storyline. The more serious they treat the bad material, the better it will be.
As the next mad, what qualities do you possess that make you perfect for the position?
I already enjoy tormenting people, so that will be an advantage. Being a know-it-all and slightly unbalanced will make me a good addition to the stable of former mads.
Can you describe how you would spend your day as a mad?
Journaling to channel resentment and anger is a good start. It’s important to be creative and thinking four steps ahead. I would think about working while playing a tower defense game before lunch.
If you had to force someone to watch a bad movie, what would the movie be?
Low budget 70’s kung-fu movies would be on the list. Ed Wood’s earnest quality and lack of ability made some really amazing bad movies. I also love any movie with a spaceship on a string.
Felicia even let us in on a little secret about why she was picked as the mad. Her brother, Ryon Day, is also a huge fan of the show. She knew that it would annoy her brother to get a picture with Joel Hodgson. The next opportunity she had to meet with Joel, she got a picture with him, they started talking about the new show, and the rest, as they say, was history. Just think how annoyed he’s going to be watching his sister on the show once the new episodes air.
